When does the Casino open....

We are leaving from Baltimore so how far out in the ocean do they go before they open the casino. I also assume when we get to Port Canaveral that they will close it. Also, is it open 24 hrs while at sea and when you are in port in the Bahamas?

International waters.

Correct.

No and no. At sea, the casino is open "late", an ambiguous term that allows them to stay open so long as a sufficient number of people are playing. Usally 2-3 am from my experience.

A cruise ship casino is never open while in any port.

I personally dont gamble but on one of my cruises last year my MIL went.

We hardly ever saw her.

One night my SIL said her mom came into the cabin and said "did you know the casino closed, they kicked me out!"

It was 5am ......

Since ships sail from Baltimore infrequently I cannot be certain but chance are very very good that the casino will be allowed to operate while still in American waters. (Chesapeake Bay). The reason I believe this to be so is the similar circumstance ships sailing from New Orleans face. The trip from New Orleans involves a seven hour journey down the Mississippi river. The Casino is allowed to open about two hours after departure from the Julia St. Pier which is a good five hours away from the mouth of the Mississippi river, much less international waters. Likewise ships usually enter the river around 11:00 pm but the casino will still operate for the first few hours up river.

I have no knowledge of the regulations so I say it is a possibility, I beleive a very good possibility. Perhaps someone who has sailed from Baltimore will share their experience.

Riverboat gambling is allowed on certain portions of the Mississippi River and that may be the reason for allowing the gambling... as far as I know that is not the case in Tampa (which did not open til out in the Gulf) and I don't think it will be with Baltimore. JMHO

No I doubt that has anything to do with it. All casinos in Louisiana are licensed to do so and regulated by the state gaming commission. Carnival has no such standing.

I would think that Carnival has agreements with the state... if I was running a gambling ship I would sure have in place that agreement... in fact I bet the state waived certain fees just to get them to come to NO.

Because you need a license from the state of Louisiana to operate a riverboat casino. The licenses are a matter of public record.

Well, hmmm... cruises leaving from Tampa and Jacksonville (Tampa is 3+hours, Jacksonville at least 1 1/2 hours) cannot open the casino until past the 3 mile zone. The ONLY cruise I have heard of that can do it is one leaving from NO and I heard that in this thread. I don't think one leaving from the east coast will be allowed to open until past the 3 miles.

Crujise ships can usually open their casinos when it gets 3-4 miles out into the ocean. Casinos onboard cruise ships don't stay open 24 hours. This isn't Nevada or Atlantic City. On my last cruise on Celebrity Cruise Line they closed the Casino at 0200 hours every day. On my last Carnival cruise, on the Miracle, they kept the Casino open longer. We left one morning at 0400 hours if I recall. They will allow the casino to remain open longer on sea days.

I found a copy of the NCL Freestyle Dailies from NCL Majesty sailing last year from Baltimore. The ship sailed at 4:00 pm. The casino opened at 5:30 pm. The ship would be somewhere between the Francis Scott Key bridge and the Annapolis Chesapeake Bay Bridge at that time, still a good five or six hours from the open sea.
