Breaking News: Another earthquake for Christchurch 6.3

Recommended Posts

A massive earthquake has struck Christchurch with witnesses telling New Zealand media the 6.3 magnitude quake felt more violent than the quake in September.

There are reports of widespread destruction in the city, whichw as hit by a quake last September.

Radio New Zealand's reporter says staff at the Christchurch newsroom had to cling to their desks during the shaking. Large filing cabinets toppled.

People made their way out of the building but when they got out they couldn't see for dust.

The quake was centred at Lyttelton at a depth of 5km.

Phone lines are down and calls are not being connected to emergency services, The New Zealand Herald reports.

The quake was felt as far away as Wellington and Dunedin.

Our Kiwi friends do not deserve this. I pray and hope no lives have been taken.

Are there any cruise ships at Lyttelton today?

Such devastation in Christchurch and still so many people trapped in buildings, just horrific.

Watching live coverage on Australia's Channel 7.

It has just been reported that more than 60% of Lyttleton has been destroyed.

Our hearts go out to all those affected. A special city in my heart as it is my birthplace.

Tragic, a lot of damage and injuries, probably fatalities too. I have a couple of mates over there doing insurance investigations in ChCh following last years quake.

My thoughts with our NZ comrades.

From Facebook:

The earthquake was definately felt onboard the Europa. The whole ship shook, a chandelier in the ship fell down, and there was some other minor damage onboard. There were 120 passengers from the ship in Christchurch at the time. This information from a reporter on Channel 9 News.

Those poor people still trapped as night begins to close in, sends shivers through my spine.

Just listened to a women speaking to our Channel Seven reporter, she called them from her mobile. She is trapped in a building under her desk with no food or water and it is pitch black.

Thank goodness for mobile phones.
