New to NCL - Questions about bringing wine onboard

Hello all--

I've done a search on this topic, but still unclear on a few points.

1. I have read that you can bring a bottle of wine onboard, but several posts lead me to believe that there is no limit to the number of bottles you can bring. Can anyone clarify for me--how many bottles of wine are you permitted to bring onboard NCL ships?

2.On other lines that I have cruised, a corkage fee applies only if you bring the wine to the dining room. But I have read that on NCL a corkage fee applies regardless of where the wine is consumed (including even if you only consume in your cabin). Is this true? If so, when and where do you have to pay this corckage fee?

Any other info or tips regarding bringing wine onboard would be greatly appreciated by this NCL newbie! Thanks:)

We are waiting onboard Star to disembark in San Pedro from our 7-day trip tp the Mexican Riviera. We brought onboard 12 bottles of wine, which we carried on. When we came to the metal detectors, they took our wheelie cart and escorted us to a talble, where an NCL employee put a sticker on each bottle and wrote u p a ticket for 12 bottles * $15 corkage fee. easy-peasy. With the sticker attached, we took wine with us to the dining rooms to the pool deck etc. At each place someone provided us glasses if needed, and removed the sticker from the bottle when we were done. We were told that they turn in the sticker for a portion of the corkage fee that they then get to keep.

If you want to save a bit of money and plan to consume your wine ONLY in your cabin, and ONLY if you booked through a TA, have the TA send you several bottles of "TA Gift Wine" (charged to your credit card).

There is only 1 choice of red or White (La Terre), and it's $17.xx a bottle.

It will be in your cabin when you arrive. It's an OK wine.

We still purchase wine in the restaurants, but enjoy having a glass on the balcony. :D

you can bring on as many bottles as you like, but you will need to pay the $15 corkage few as soon as you go through the scanner. They have a table waiting with some guy or gal standing there smiling. Actually they usually are not smiling and I don't know why. They are about to get $15 per bottle from us, you would think they could say thank you?

As everyone has already commented, yes, you can bring as much wine as you would like. If carrying on, you will pay the corkage fee after going through security. If you put the wine in your checked baggage and it is detected, you get the summons to the Naughty Room and will pay the fee there. If for some reason, it goes undetected and you take a bottle to a restaurant or dining room, you will be charged then.

Buy boxed wine (if you like it), take it out of the box and pack the "bladder" in your luggage. No corkage fee.

It is only a given if you don't get caught. From our cruise (Epic, Oct. 2-9), our roll call leader was caught. Made an appearance in the Naughty Room and there was major discussion as to how much to charge for the box wine (it was also taken out of the box). They ended up letting him go with the $15 corkage fee.

I feel like I read two different answers. Is the corkage fee $15 per bottle or just a flat $15 no matter how much wine you bring?

Thank you!

Don't we wish it was $15 regardless. You confusion is coming from whether they charge $15 per .750 size bottle or $15 regardless of the size and that is up to the person or persons collecting. We have brought both 750 bottles and 1.5 liter , always it has been $15 per bottle, others say they have paid $30 for the larger bottles, who knows?

Random question. What's to stop someone (not me of course) from filling up a wine bottle with booze and recorking/resealing it? Yeah, you'd pay the $15, but you'd have a bottle of scotch with you. Just thinking outside the box here.

If someone wants to go to all that bother, go ahead. If you get caught, you will lose the booze, I just can't see it would be worth it..

I see everyone talking about bottles, but will they allow you to declare a box of wine? And if so, does anyone know what the standard fee (if I'm not lucky enough to be charged the $15 ) is?

again, that is a matter of who is doing the checking. You might be charged $15, you might get it taken away, you might be charged $60. It is anyone's guess.

i just returned from the epic and was not charged anything for any of my 6 bottles of wine (all were the large bottles)...

as far as sneaking liquor on in a wine bottle, i'm sure it would work but we just use those bag things called rum runners (one bottle of crown and one bottle of bailey's), threw em in our luggage under some clothes and didn't have any problem getting em on

So you carried the six large bottles onboard or did you have them in checked bags? Again, it is hit or miss, usually more hit. I have have had people on our roll calls get caught with boxed wine taken out of the box while others in their same party got away with it.

We put them in a seperate bag by themselves and sent them along with the rest of our luggage, we weren't trying to hide them and there's no way they could've missed it as there was nothing else in the bag... maybe somebody was just in a nice mood that day!

So they only allow bottles, and if they are in a good mood might allow a box of wine? I don't mind paying the corkage fee, but I would hate to show up with a box and have them take it from me.

Has anyone experienced declaring a box of wine and having it taken away, or been allowed to take it on?

That is about right, now let's see if anyone has had a real experience with this? We have seen people get it taken away until the end of the cruise, we haven't tried the box thing.

As previously mentioned, our CC roll call leader took box wine (out of the box) and it was detected and he was called to the Naughty Room. There was discussion as to how much to charge him for corkage. The price went back and forth between $15 and $30. Finally, they decided $15. His traveling companions also had boxed wine and rum runners and it went undetected.

Bottles of wine? How were they packed?

we just put them in a gym bag with a towel on the bottom in case they broke (we bought them in miami beforehand so didn't have to worry about them on an airplane), also we had a 6 pack of those little mini-coke bottles in there and surprisingly enough everything made it to our room in one piece. This bag did come to our room later than the rest so we thought we had got busted but it did arrive.. Maybe they charge when you bring the bottle into a restaurant? We brought our own cork, got wine glasses from the bar and poured it in the room just in case...
