Parking in Southampton

I know this has been covered before but not for some time. We are booked on Britannia in July for a week in Norway, and will need to park the car somewhere safe.

Any suggestions... JB?

We have used Just Park. It has cost us £37.50 for the week in a private designated car park very near the port. We have done this before in various other locations including Southampton.

Of course, the 'doom and gloom' brigade will come up with negatives, but we have never had any problems.

We have also used Just Park but parked on the drive of a private house - cost about £45 for two weeks. The owner dropped us off at the ship with a taxi on our return costing £10.

Absolutely no problems and would do it again.

If you want to park at the port, then CPS (Cruise & Passenger Services) do P&O, Cunard etc.. It's pricey but you have peace of mind and they will move the car for you if you embark/disembark from different terminals.

Parking4cruises are cheaper than CPS and provide a similar service. You just need to park your car in the short term car park and handover your key.

CPS is the most convenient and easiest - no transfers and your car's at the terminal when you disembark

Sorry, Bob, Southampton parking's not my specialised subject - living near the port, friends give us a lift.

Port parking is expensive, but simple & safe.

For a short cruise, up to say 7 days, it's probably worth biting the bullet.

For longer it's worth looking elsewhere.

- Park-in-my-drive, park-at-my-house etc is popular but check the location and transfer arrangements. And there are insurance implications - perhaps not with your car insurer, but with the house-holder's policy. Damage to a third person's property is covered by most household insurance, so if a tree up-rooted in a storm & flattened your car whilst parked at a friend's house their house insurance would cover it - but if it's paid parking without paid parking included in the cover, the house-holder's insurer won't want to know.

- Hotel stay-and-park? Several hotels offer this, including Hol Inn & Mercure Dolphin in the city centre, and Hilton Doubletree in Chilworth & Hol Inn Eastleigh (those two include transfers).

- Secure parking at http://www.holidayextras.co.uk/port-parking/southampton/cruise-parking.html This is on the other side of Southampton Water at Marchwood & includes a 20-minute shuttle-bus ride. The only negatives I've heard are that sometimes it's a long wait for the minibus. The saving is worth the grief for a long cruise, mebbe not for your 7-day cruise.

- meet-and-greet. Southampton has had its share of villains up to the usual tricks - street parking, parking in fields, used as personal transport, damage, etc etc etc etc. Once their bad reputation spreads they simply change their name - so don't trust one you've never heard of. I've heard a number of good reports (and now add Newport Dave's) about .http://www.parking4cruises.co.uk/ and no negatives. But I'd definitely fight shy of other meet-and-greets.

Have a great cruise in Norway - the only country where folk try to smuggle booze off their ship :p

This is far from a new problem/scam. I also remember a company that was swapping low mileage engines for high mileage ones while the owners were happily sunning themselves.

I see that there is only £10 difference between parking4cruises and CPS. Looks like the bullet will have to be bitten - no way am I going to trust some potentially dodgy operator with my pride and joy, or my car...:)
