Bagzilla & Galveston Scanners

On a whim I bought this really big suitcase at a resale in order to

have plenty of room for clothes and bring backs. Afterwards I've

often thought "what the hell was I thinking". Still one has to ask...

The suitcase measures 13" deep x 31" tall by 21" wide.

Will that go thru the scanners at the Galveston terminals?

Thanks,

JT

Those dimensions sound like a typical large sized suitcase which is typically around the 30 inch mark. I don't think it will fit through the security scanner for a carry-on, but is good for checking with the porters. If you fly to the cruise port, you'll want to be mindful of the usual 50 lb. limit that airlines impose unless you want to pay for being over the weight limit.

You might be oversized for airlines and they love to charge for being too big.

If history predicts the future then I say no. We sail from Galveston 3-4 times a year and every cruise we see people walking back from the security lines to go check baggage.

The scanner template allows for the 22" suitcases stuffed to the limit but larger ones don't fit. I use a rolling garment bag that fits in the scanner and it goes in sideways. That and my backpack and I'm walking on and off the ship.

On a side note, if one of your friends is platinum or has FTTF have them take your carry-on bags to their cabin until 1:30pm. We do this for those traveling with us.

The OP didn't elaborate about which scanners, but I doubt if she meant carry on. The luggage given to the porters is also scanned. I have a big one and it's 31" tall, but not as wide. No way would I want to tote that thing as a carry on:eek:

I'd think it'd be too heavy. Even though the ports don't have a weight restriction who do you think gets the luggage to the cabins? It's the newbies onboard.

Don't worry about the weight. It builds strength and character.

I chickened out. I'm going to take a large suitcase that I know will

make it through the scanners and a smaller suitcase that will sit

on top of the larger one so it's easy to carry.

I will use Bagzilla to smuggle in endangered refrigerators

into the country. ;)

Thanks,

My Sister got hosed with a $100.00 oversize bag fee for a case about the same size is yours by the airline. I had just purchased a similar bag as hers and took it back and bought a 28" tall bag; I didn't want to chance being hit with the huge fees. The overall dimensions (wheels included) for most airlines are 62" maximum (Height x width x depth.) It is a huge bummer to have to fork over $$$ because your luggage was underweight, but over sized by a few inches. Some airlines let it go, but it is not worth the hassle to use a large bag. This might be a reason why some stores have these huge bags on clearance. The good news is that the large suitcase will be the right size after a flight and cruise when the wheels get knocked off....LOL!
