Deceptive Oceania Upgrade Policy

Oceania advertises that their O Life promotion provides free air plus either on board credit, a beverage package, or excursions. But beware if you need to upgrade your flights to business class or to first class. A surprise and hidden costs are lurking.Unlike other cruise lines, Oceania’s upgrade applies only to the international segments of flights; domestic segments are booked economy. This information is not provided up front, and I discovered it long after final payment when the air itinerary was provided and I looked for seat assignments. In my case, a Tahiti to Los Angeles segment was business class, but the Los Angeles to Miami segment was economy. I was offered an upgrade to first class on the latter segment for an additional $875 per person. A search through the fine print of the Guest Ticket/Contract did reveal the statement “Upgrades apply to International flights and may not apply to U.S. domestic or intra-continental flights within North America…”

So then not deceptive; you just did not read the whole contract before making the purchase. Thanks for the warning.

Currently Oceania is offering a $149 Premium Economy upgrade offer, and the asterisk notes:

*Standard terms apply. View complete terms and conditions. $149 Air Upgrade is a Premium Economy Air Upgrade only available when air is purchased through Oceania Cruises. It applies to intercontinental flights only and is priced per person, each way, on select voyages from select gateways, open to all categories and based on availability. Not all amenities will be available on all carriers.

I feel your pain--we wanted to book O for a cruise, and we aren't located at a gateway. Previously O would let you pay to fly to the gateway, and then be eligible for the premium upgrade, but they've stopped allowing that. However, the policy is clear, and was available for you to read before you booked the tickets, it appears.

We recently flew on United and paid for an economy plus upgrade, and the upgrade was only valid on the international flights. We've also booked premium on Air Canada Rouge for an upcoming cruise, and the same policy applies.

Agree, doesn't sound deceptive at all. All contracts should be carefully read. IMO, paying $875 to fly F, MIA-LAX would not be worth it.

Depends on the airline. AA operate longhaul 777s with proper international First Class seating on some flights between MIA and LAX, 6'6" fully flat bed seating. They retail for $2000+ one way.

No deception here. Just another anecdote to remind people to READ THE DETAILS!

OP: sorry that you feel you were taken. But, you didn't read closely enough until you thought you were screwed and wanted to skewer Oceania, only to find they were in the right and you were wrong.

Here's an add on. US Domestic airlines do NOT offer Premium Economy service on any flights with the US. Most European Airlines only offer the service on international flights not infra Europe. Even those airlines that do offer PE service they don't ( or very rarely) offer it on US legged flights. For example BA offers PE service DFW-LHR. However, they have a flight that goes DFW-JFK-LHR that offers no PE service. Oceania uses Air Canada for PE. That service begins in Canada. Air Canada does not even offer BC to many of its US destinations!
