The only strike I've heard about is the dedicated date strikes on the 15th, 17th, and various random dates after that. Not a full-on strike.

The airport security people are not happy with the pay increase offered. They started with several small, 1 hour strikes, and now have upped the ante to 24 hour strikes, and it seems to be moving to other airports besides Barcelona.

Best you can do is allow plenty of time.

wow thanks for the update

thats sure is close as we leave on the 16th--right between the 2 strike dates

I hope on the 16th its business as usual--but since our flight is at 345pm and taking disney trasfers we should be there for hrs before our flight

There MAY BE a strike during a coiuple of days from september till december. They start the 15th of september!.

But the union says that they are going to talk again and that there is a big change that they will get an agreement on the 31th of august

There is a list of dates available..

hope this helps

For what it's worth, these pop up strikes seem to happen in Barcelona on a regular basis. So far, they have caused a lot of anxiety to DCL cruisers, but have not been a problem. Of course, the past doesn't guarantee the future.

Bottom line--don't worry at this point. You surely have travel insurance, so worst case you insurance will put you up in a hotel for a day. So far, even that has not been necessary. These things have a way of working themselves out before they become a problem for travelers.

thanks mokismommy for the very reassuring post

I know from other things that in the end everything works out but its just so stressful having all of these issues as weeks your to leave on a wonderful cruise

thanks again

FYI

It is for reasons like this, and sickness/injury while traveling, that I strongly recommend trip insurance to cover your cruise and flight. So if you have to make alternative plans, like take a train to/from Seville or another transportation center, your costs, missed flights, cruise ships, hotels etc. are covered. You can purchase this through your travel agent or cruise line. In this case you probably have had your tickets for awhile, so insurance is not available.

Also if you purchase your airfare through the cruise line, which I also recommend since they have some of the best deals, it is their problem. Call them. they will have a plan and more updated information than you can obtain.

My thought is that you can price air thru the cruise line as well as on your own. DCL is MUCH less flexible than other lines about the requirements of doing air thru them. For example, if you do DCL air, you are required to use their transportation to/from the cruise terminal and to stay at one of the hotels they have selected. You are completely right that if there is an air issue and you purchased air thru the cruise line, they need to make it work (and they will).

We've found that DCL sometimes has good rates on flights from the US to Europe, but that we can typically do our own domestic air arrangements at a better rate with more flexibility than DCL offers. Since we usually fly into BCN a day before the cruise, that often makes DCL air a less optimal choice. Their $500 overnight hotel more than eats any air savings.
