Orion NG Kimberly and the Spice Islands

Recommended Posts

We are thinking about the Aug expedition on the Orion (now National Geographic) around Kimberly and ending in Bali.

Anybody have any experience with this or similar trips?

The price is high (11000 USD and up for 14 nights). Is it worth it or are there better options?

Thanks

I've sailed on the Orion and she's a very fine ship. All these expedition-style cruises are expensive and as Lindblad is an American outfit there are a lot of extras. However, I have looked at this itinerary and I don't like it much. The Kimberley section is fine but the Indonesian section isn't very good and despite the title of the cruise you don't go to any spice islands. Komodo is a bit of theme park these days so unless you really must see one of these reptiles then you are not missing much. The scenery, of course, is beautiful and August is the best/driest time of year. I sailed many of these islands last January and it rained all the time. To get the best out of Indonesia as a cruise destination you need to visit West Papua and the Banda Islands.
