Next HAL Ship to be Named ms Nieuw Statendam

Recommended Posts

Marketing people come up with all kind of 'waffle' to justify their jobs!

When QUEEN MARY 2 came out it was the reason it was because she was the 'second ship to be named QUEEN MARY'. Rubbish. They just thought it sounded 'kewel' like QUEEN ELIZABETH 2. It was a bad idea. Then QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 has left the fleet and they are stuck with the suffix '2'. They build a new ship for the fleet and call her QUEEN ELIZABETH and it was named after the first ship QUEEN ELIZABETH b. 1940. Ah.... but the second ship named after the QUEEN ELIZABETH was the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 so why not all the new one... QUEEN ELIZABETH 3? Thankfully that idea was dropped.

HAL can always find new names for the ships. EURODAM, KONINGSDAM... and even STATENDAM, RYNDAM, ZUIDERDAM, OOSTERDAM, WESTERDAM and NOORDAM. All perfectly good names. We already had old ships with like ZUIDERDAM, WESTERDAM and NOORDAM back from the 1940s. Do we really need to call every ship with "NIEUW"? Just making it longer to read does not make it better. Even one of the best names was the Italian liner REX. Perfect.

My old company, J&J Denholm was originally named Denholm Line Steamers The suffix was 'PARK'. Great names SCOTSPARK, GLENPARK, WELLPARK. CARRONARK, LYLEPARK, Then a new ship was being built for three partner owners. One owner was Denholm who wanted PARK. The second owner was Naess Shipping and his ships started with NAESS. The third owner was Turnbull Shipping and his ships used suffix GATE. The new ship was built and launched as the NAESS PARKGATE!

My point.... if there is a reason with naming a ship that is fine. If it is 'waffle' then it will just be a nuisance for no other purpose.

With the Nieuw Statendam joining the fleet, down the road we could have a new BUILD called STATENDAM VI.
THAT would be really confusing, having a new Statendam that is newer than the Nieuw Statendam!! :D

The Ritz Carlton was a nightclub on Rotterdam V.

There was a bandstand, copper dance floor, lots of plush seating, a grand staircase leading up to a second level, which overlooked the lower level. It was beautifully decorated, down to the most minute detail.

It's still there, complete with beautiful decorations!

Why does it need any prefix for the ship's name?

Like CARNIVAL XXXXXXX ... or CELEBRITY XXXXXX or COSTA XXXXXXX or NORWEGIAN XXXXXXX. The HAL names are quite fine the way they are. Leave them along.

The first time your toilet breaks you won't be too happy anything "NIEUW'!

NIEUW AMSTERDAM is just fine. There is a reason for that name.

STATENDAM is a perfect name.... one of the best in the fleet!

I am all with you captain...
