Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

I was recently on the Grand Princess and smokers congregated in the casino and smoked. Didn't play the machines at all just stood or sat around. I opened my mouth to mention they were breaking Princess" rules and was told to mind my own business. Why don't smokers read the smoking policy so they won't take a cruise if smoking is that important to them.

There is no requirement that one must be playing a machine in order to smoke in the appropriate area of the casino, so you were incorrect in stating that they were "breaking the rules". There is no such rule.

The smoking in the casino grand princess even when not open for gaming was HORRIBLE on our Nov cruise last year.... We avoided that entire area (two levels were affected because of 'drift') the entire cruise! Going to the help desk was a trial!

Grey,

Please read Post 689 that states per Princess rules there is no smoking in the casino.

I have never seen that version of the smoking policy before. However, in the Passage Contract, Section 5, it states the following:

" No Guest under the age of 18 shall be permitted to engage in any gaming activities on board any ship or to purchase cigarettes or tobacco products. On some sailings the minimum age for alcohol is under 21 and each Guest agrees to abide by whatever alcohol age restriction is in place on the ship during the Guest's cruise. Indoor areas onboard the vessels are non-smoking and smoking is only permitted in designated sections. Outdoor smoking areas are clearly posted throughout the vessel. Smoking is prohibited in Guest staterooms and balconies. Violations to the onboard smoking policy will result in a $250 cleaning fee for each occurrence, which will be charged to Your stateroom account. Repeated violations may result in You being disembarked prior to the end of the Cruise without any refund. The use of electronic cigarettes, personal vaporizers, or electronic nicotine delivery systems is allowed within the confines of the Guest's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only."

It can be argued that there is no mention of required machine play in the Passage Contract, and the starboard side of the casino is, in fact, a designated indoor smoking area except on non-smoking nights. In cases where a policy conflicts with the Passage Contract, I would think the verbiage of the Passage Contract would prevail.

The reality of the situation is that enforcement of machine play in order to light up just isn't going to happen. I could sit down at a machine, play one line at one cent waiting two minutes between spins, and be in compliance with the policy. I would also be costing the casino revenue by keeping a serious player from playing the machine - and what if you are the player waiting for that particular machine? Are you going to be happy?

It shouldn't matter to you whether someone is playing a machine or not if they want to light up. If you want to stand on your position of "that's the rule", more power to you, but to me, it sounds suspiciously like pot-stirring.

Thrak, I agree completely. No need to be nasty; but it seems that sometimes, haters gotta hate.

Kennicott: the language quoted in post #689 is from the FAQs. It is NOT from the Passage Contract. And, for some reason, I can't pull up the "onboard smoking policy" which is normally attached to a booking, which might give a clearer answer.

My point is that answers to FAQs do not set policy. In fact, sometimes the answers to FAQs are incorrect. The snippet of language you have quoted, besides being used in a completely different context, does not make an answer given by a FAQ page gospel or rule. The defining document is the Passage Contract - that's what you, I, and everyone else agree to when we make our bookings. We also agree to abide by the policies set forth, but an answer on a FAQ page does NOT constitute a policy.

I've burned enough electrons on this subject.

Grey, out. (mic drop)

We were just on the Coral Princess from Whittier to Vancouver. There was a noticeably minimal amount of smoking, including non-smoking nights, in the casino.

We were on the Carnival Magic last year and you couldn't see the other side of the casino for smoke.

It doesn't bother me too much, but my wife won't go into a smokey casino. The Princess experience would make us more likely to cruise Princess than Carnival.

There are time when the casino's can get really bad with smoke. That when we get out.

I forgot to post the Princess response after I wrote and asked them why they didn't make consistent, smoking language in all their advisories. I pointed out that their Passage Contracts not only prohibit all indoor smoking on their ships, which contradicts actual practice as well as omits other documented smoking rules like guests must be playing the slots in order to smoke, this confuses some guests that insist the "Passage Contract" to be the final word. What I received is the following, note, they appear determined to only respond to rules on a cruise we are currently booked. Anyway, their new policy makes sense to me:

"Dear Mr -------,

Thank you for your correspondence regarding your upcoming cruise onboard Pacific Princess. We appreciate the time you have taken to share your concerns, and we welcome the opportunity to respond at this time.

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every guest has a comfortable onboard experience, Princess Cruises has introduced more restrictive smoking policies, prohibiting smoking in guest staterooms and balconies for all voyages that depart after January 15, 2012.

For the enjoyment of the public lounges and facilities, indoor areas on board Pacific Princess are non-smoking. Smoking is only permitted in a designated section of the Pacific Lounge. Smoking cigars or pipes outside of designated areas is not permitted. Outdoor smoking areas are clearly posted throughout the vessel. Smoking is not permitted in staterooms and balconies. Violations of this non-smoking policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the guest's stateroom account.

All smoking areas are supplied with a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. The smoking areas are also easily identified with appropriate signage and communicated to guests through shipboard documentation.

The Casino and Casino Bar are non-smoking areas on board, with the exception of designated slot machines where guests are permitted to smoke only while playing at those machines. All table games are non-smoking. The Casino will also have one or more non-smoking nights (6:00 PM to closing), depending on the length of the voyage.

Smoking information is printed in the Princess Patter as well as the Welcome Aboard insert.

Mr -------, thank you once again for taking the time to share your concerns. We look forward to having you onboard Pacific Princess in November for what we hope will be a completely enjoyable cruise vacation. Until then, we send our kind regards.

Sincerely,

Princess Cruises

You can only smoke your cigars in the Cigar bar.... not sure what it's called on the Star... Churchill, Speakeasy etc. It's on Deck 6.

Nina, thanks for the info. The last cigar bar I was in on Princess was loaded with cigarette smokers. I can do without that.

You will have to get used to that. Now that smoking is more restricted the cigarette smokers have to go somewhere. I have never seen anything from Princess that says cig smokers are not able to use the cigar lounge, and if anything if was made cigar only then it would be empty 90% of the time.

After looking at the deck plans with a magnifying glass, I can not find anything that looks like a cigar lounge on the Star. Hopefully there will be an area on deck where I can enjoy a drink and a stick.

The name of the cigar bar is Shooters on the Star Princess. Deck 6 forward just outside of the Princess Theater.

Island Princess has a smoking room... I think it's called Churchill something or other... midship in the atrium area... I think it was deck 5. Also up on ..... sorry...not looking at deck chart right now... like... deck 14 aft. There is a primarily open area with glass partition walls to sort of block the wind. It can still be windy (sometimes VERY) .

Cigarettes were cheap. Available by the pack at the bars and by the carton in one (or more) of the shops.

Thanks for the info. I have found on most Princess ships the "Cigar Lounge" has turned itself into a cigarette hangout. I really prefer to enjoy my sticks outside away from a confined area. Does any know if there is an area on the Star were I can enjoy a cigar outside?

Looks like your cigar smoking is relegated to the exclusive smoking lounges like “Churchill’s” etc. Here are supposedly the latest rules:

Princess Cruises:

Where You Can Smoke: Smoking is permitted in cigar lounges, in sections of nightclubs and casinos, and on portions of open decks that are clearly marked "Designated Smoking Areas." Electronic cigarette smoking is permitted in staterooms (but not on balconies) and in other designated smoking areas. Cigar and pipe smoking is permitted only in cigar lounges.

Where You Can't: Smoking is prohibited in show lounges, elevators, dining rooms and all food service areas. Princess also prohibits smoking in cabins and balconies across its fleet. Passengers may not smoke in casinos, except for at designated slot machines while playing those machines. Casinos have designated nonsmoking nights, beginning at 6 p.m. on select nights, depending on the sailing.
