We will be docking in Port Nawiliwili and have booked a tour from 8:30-1:00 visiting Waimea Canyon and Spouting Horn. The ship leaves port again at 6:00. Any suggestions as to what we can do between 1:00 & 4:00-4:30? Is there a beach we can go to that is near port or a short taxi ride? Any suggestions will be welcomed.

We also booked a tour to The Volcano National Park when we dock in Hilo. Time frame for the tour is from 8:30-1:00 as well. The ship leaves port at 4:00. Besides going back to the ship is there anything we can do that is close to port to kill some time. Would like to be back on the ship no later than 3:00.

Thank you.

I see you are new to CC. I have two suggestions (since you probably won't get an answer here unless someone who has been there happens to see your question).

The first is to check at your Roll Call. You haven't given me enough information to find that for you.

The second is to go to the Ports of Call. This link is for Hawaii:

Good luck!

Helicopter tour of NaPali coast. No other Kauai tour (or helicopter tour anywhere else in the world) will come close.

There is a public beach not far from Nawiliwili harbor (right in front of Duke's Canoe Club at the Marriott).

has a very cool, unique "Farmer's Market"...where you can buy flower arrangements to bring back to the ship (at least that was allowed on X) and sample coconut milk right from a coconut broken open on the spot...also some unique food and jewelry...enjoy...but maybe try and check how long vendors are there as we have always gone first thing in the AM. Speaking as a former NPS Ranger in Hawaii, Dont waste your money on paying for a tour of the park. The NPS offers a full schedule of daily walks and talks far in excess of what a tour guide can deliver or knows. The Visitor center will have them posted and you can go to the NPS web site, There are Rangers who give talks too at the Jagger museum,

The Visitor center has excellent movies and shows just how to see the park .... I used to laugh at many tours because folks pay for a bus ride, and the "guide" just drives the visitors to a Ranger talk... Ranger Dean, or Adrian or Geologist Noel... will be there waiting...... no charge except to get into the park !!! Tell en Ranger Dan sent ya...

Get a rental car and enjoy your park

For lunch hit the Lava Rock cafe in Volcano, When you get back to Hilo skip the town..its not much and head 5 miles north to the 4 mile scenic drive...it follows the old 1930's road back to Hilo through a stunning tropical jungle, streams looks like it was a Indaina Jones set....

For Kauai - Dan's advice is also good. Strongly recommend renting a car and doing it yourself. It's practically impossible to get lost in Kauai, there is only one road to the canyon. Having a car would allow you to stop in any of the little towns along the way or to picnic on one of the beaches you will pass.

Recommend you go first to Waimea Canyon as the weather and viewing is sometimes better earlier- no guarantees either way. Then take it from there. Also suggest you get a copy of the "Ultimate Kauai" guide book - available in most libraries or on Amazon. It will tell you what you are seeing and what the sights are all along the south shore.

Enjoy!

The best thing to do is to take a helo tour.... nothing even come close

Now Id rent a car, they will pick you up from the pier, a 10 min ride Head soith on the only hiway there is to Waimea canyon, , then retrace your steps and still on the same hiway, head north to Princeville and the end of the road,, turn around and head back to the airport total time 5 hours with stops.

Navigating Kauai is so easy with only 1 main road and about 50 miles of driving... none of it on exposed or sub standard roads... A blind monkey and a duck could find their way.... even if the duck was sick..... A caution on Kauai Revealed....it is known locally as Kauai "Reviled"... and hated because the authors suggest you trespass on private lands.. The same goes for Hawaii. Many law suits have been filed against the author who could care less. He puts thing is his book that others dont because many are illegal and irresponsible things to do.... But is sells books None of the National Parks book stores will even stock the book. because of the books total disregard for visitor safety and promotes going in closed areas and off trail activities. which are detrimental to the parks ecology.

I suggest simple Fodors, or National Geographic, or Moon. Guide There are very few out of the way places and its no problem for a first time visitor to see and experience everything except the NaPali coast and that can be done by Helo. Also many times the ship will depart and sail around the Na Pli coast for sunset... so there is a freebee.

It's about 30 miles from Lihue (Nawiliwili) to Waimea Canyon, so it's going to take longer than 10 minutes. Altho' there is only one road, and it's impossible to get lost, there IS traffic to be considered. Be sure to allow yourself enough time should you decide to drive to Princeville and back.

Its 10 min from the ship to the car rental !!! From there figuring Hawaiian time to get the car 1 hour max to the canyon Then about 2 .5 hours waimea canyon to Princevile and 1.25 hours back to the rental car

4:45 hours total start by 0830 and be back 1330 which will avoid most commute traffic
