How is Voom on Grandeur now?

Just signed up for the higher priced plan using DWs C&A coupon so we get it free for 2 days, download speed 3.89 Mbps upload speed 1.26 Mbps.

 

Big difference between opening pages on here account and on mine.

Bob--I just did the sppedtest.net

 

download is 0.49 mbps and upload was 0.11 mbps. I ran the test a second time and got 0.47 as download. It did not register at all on upload. arg!

I'm on Grandeur next week. All I want to be able to do is read and send emails and possibly post a picture or 2 on Facebook. On our Serenade cruise in March before Voom, we couldn't do either after day 3 of a 10 day trip. I was livid! The Casino Manager, not Guest Services, gave me a refund. I couldn't even get the loyalty manager to return my calls.

Not much changed on either Serenade or Grandeur with the introduction of Voom. I suspect that they increased the down speeds somewhat to achieve the numbers folks have reported on STREAM, but nothing else changed. What you experienced on Serenade could happen on Grandeur (as the underlying infrastructure has likely not changed), but not likely.

Put the phone in Airplane mode. Turn on WiFi. That's it.

Depends what you mean by "service".

You will have a connection to the internet, so email, internet texting, FB, etc. witll work fine.

Unless you have WiFi Calling (ask your carrier), you won't be able to make or receive voice phone calls without using a program like Skype, WhatsApp, etc.

You should try this at home before you ever cruise. Put your phone in airplane mode, turn on WiFi only and see what works and what doesn't. Unless your phone/carrier allows it and you have it turned on (WiFi texting), texting will not work without a separate app.

Great, then do the same thing on the ship and you should be fine.

Reported this on another thread. Just left the Grandeur Saturday. I have never had trouble with emails/websites. The last several cruises ( March and May) I have been trying to use my Directv app to watch news shows - I did not try anything else. I had the best connection I have ever had on Grandeur starting with my 8/18 trip. I was able to watch my news shows with very little "cutting out" of service. The longest I had a show running was 2 hours. I was very pleased with the surf package. Katherine

I was with Lady Hudson on the Grandeur and I had no problems either, but didn't try viewing TV shows or anything, but I had no trouble with posting pictures and videos. "There is no place like home", but it was good enough for what I wanted to do. I think it was better than it used to be.

I already purchased it for my December cruise. With the 30% and my D+ discounts, I got the Surf package for 12 nights for $109. I thought that was a good deal.

That is the same price for everyone. The D+ discount can only be applied to on board packages which is $12.99/day. Here's a cheaper way to get internet using your D+coupons. Assuming there's two of you, use the first coupon on day 2 (you'll have cell signal till Norfolk in the morning), then on day 4 you buy the remaining days package for $ 63.92 (8 x 12.99 - 40) using the second coupon.;)
