We will be returning a rental car prior to boarding cruise ship in Los Angeles. Is Long Beach the closest city to port? Is downtown Long Beach or the airport closer to port? As we are departing on a Sunday many downtown agencies are closed. Thanks.

Since you are cruising with Celebrity, your port will be the World Cruise Center in San Pedro. Enterprise and Hertz both have offices in San Pedro--except, as you noted, both are typically closed Sunday. You might want to contact them and ask if there is an alternative way to drop the car there (ie, leave the car, place keys in a drop box).

Otherwise, most agencies have offices in Long Beach. Downtown Long Beach is 6-8 miles from San Pedro. Long Beach Airport is approximately 16 miles away, depending on route (there are shorter routes, but off the freeways and require a slow, painful progression of surface streets and traffic signals at most every intersection). Hertz also has an office in Torrance at the Marriott--10 miles from the port and open until 1:00 pm on Sundays (a closer one in Lomita is closed Sundays). Avis and Budget have two locations in Torrance open until 2:00 pm on Sundays. It's sometimes easier to get to San Pedro from Torrance than from Long Beach--no bridges and harbor... Also, all of the rental car agencies are open virtually around the clock at LAX--20 miles from the port but with lots of transportation options to the port.

Good luck...

Thanks Bruin or such a thorough reply.
