Dishonest cruise passengers

Recommended Posts

Going thru Customs 5/16 from a cruise on the Oasis, I accidently left my camera bag on the desk at Station 20 and when I went back about 5 minutes later, it was gone! Our pictures and a Nikkon D7100 with multiple lenses went home with someone who knew he/she was stealing a camera. Customs does NOT use cameras to monitor anything. RCCL uses facial recognition software to match you with photos taken on board. How can people be that heartless to steal your memories.

Wolf, I hate to hear this and feel your pain! On the very last day of my honeymoon I left my camera bag in a restaurant booth, remembered it when I got to the car and went back for it. It had only been about 5 minutes but it was gone. All my honeymoon photos were lost, thankfully the camera and lens were cheap but the images can never be replaced.

Was there a lost and Found nearby?

This won't help you now, but Before leaving on a trip, write up your Contact/return to info on a blank piece of paper or even on the computer and take a picture of it. At least if someone honest finds it, they will know how to contact you.

Items left at the customs desk are turned over to port security. Thats where you should have gone. All dishonest cruise passengers will be there in a line up:rolleyes:

Having your name on it may not have mattered!:( It happens on ships too.

I had this great Tilley hat that was about 8 years old, and my name, address, and phone # were clearly written on the secret pocket (in the ID tag blanks) in permanent marker. I was very attached to that hat as it fit me perfectly and it had done a LOT of traveling with me. Then, 5 years ago it disappeared on a ship.

I had worn it for a walk around the top deck on Rhapsody one sea day morning, and then we went to the theater for something. I noticed about 20 min. after leaving the theater that I didn't have my hat and went back for it, only to find it GONE! I searched the area around our seats about 4 times. I haunted GS and the Lost & Found for the remainder of the cruise, but no luck. My hat is now on someone else's head, though my name is still there in the crown. And I had to get a new sea pass since my sea pass, a lip gloss, and 4 one dollar bills (tip money) were in the secret pocket.

Although Tilleys are expensive as hats go, it wasn't worth nearly as much as a camera with lenses, and I didn't lose a whole trip's worth of memories in a camera, so those losses are undeniably worse. It felt so bad, though, to lose that hat. Those of us who wear Tilleys are kind of like a cult - we recognize each other's hats and strike up conversations and friendships wherever we go. People with Tilley hats have great stories…like the guy who was an elephant keeper in a zoo. An elephant ate his hat 3 times, and all 3 times he shadowed the elephant and retrieved it, washed & dried it, and continued to wear it. Alex Tilley tried to buy it back from him for the Tilley museum, but the zoo dude would not part with it. That's how attached we get to our Tilleys.

I came home from that cruise, got out the tape measure, measured my head again, went to the Tilley site and immediately ordered another one. I'm now really really careful with my hat. It's marked with my name and contact info, but I know that only works if an honest person finds it. (And I try not to get too close to elephants!:D)

I "Really Really" get what you are saying :D

BTW, I did not find my hat on a cruise ship. My wife bought it for me on our wedding anniversary several years ago.

Years and years ago my dad was coming home from an over seas business trip and he left his very expensive camera in his airline seat while he went to the bathroom. When he came back it was gone. He had to spend the rest of his flight knowing that someone on that plane had taken his camera. To this day it makes me irate knowing that someone did that to my dad.

People will steal (borrow lol) anything that is not tied down and it is not exclusive on cruise ships. A few years ago we were vacationing in Caesar's Palace L.V. and my wife had this well aged sweater that she brought along as certain sections in the casino went from cold to warm. One evening while at the slots she placed the sweater in back of her chair and forgot it when she got up to meet me. She realized a few minutes later and went back, but it was gone. Never showed up in lost & found. As I said the sweater wasn't much, but yet it was valuable to whomever borrowed it.

We got stuck in a security line getting back on the Freedom while in St Martaen. The person manning the xray machine was pushing through the bags quickly but the line of people got backed up going through the xray machine as security patted down a few crew members. I was in front of my husband waiting to go through and I see a very big man put on my husband's camera backpack and head towards the stairs. I yelled, "Hey, that is our camera bag, that is not yours!" and the guy looked at me but kept walking. The crew member at the xray flagged me through the line and the two security guards who were patting down the crew members immediately stopped what they were doing and started towards the guy. DH was stuck at the xray machine because, as usual, he set the stupid thing off . Seeing me now with security in tow, the guy starts to play dumb and hands over the camera bag saying that our gray bag looked exactly like his forest green bag that was still on the table. Security told him he needed to be more careful but let him go. I know he knew exactly what he was doing by the look he gave me and the fact that he never apologized. We did see him later in the week and he just stared us down.

We now make sure we hook all our bags together so we can't leave anything behind and it also makes it harder for anyone to steal anything.

DPOSTMAN - I like your Tilley! And I know, as a Tilley wearer, you probably understand my pain - haha! (But I know your hat in the pic is not mine - looks like yours is an LT6 and mine was an LT5 with a slightly smaller brim.) Yours is like my DH's Tilley. That one is a very dashing look on a man, I think!:p

We were on a cruise on Freedom a few years ago and attended a champagne sail away party on the helipad. It was fascinating - must have been about a dozen Tilley people out there. Of course we all found each other and talked…and a gust of wind took one guy's hat overboard. It was the small brimmed one with the side snaps for the brim. He was pissed!!! We all watched the hat as we passed it and sailed away, and (in case you wondered…) they do indeed float!

Happy travels in your Tilley! And don't forget to use the strap system in windy situations...;)

We had someone return my daughter's camera to Guest Services and her purse. We were fortunate that both items (on different cruises) were found by decent and honest people. Just wanted to point out that it was our own carelessness that caused both of these to be left behind and that there are still some good decent and honest people out there.

I've been barked at by security, but I ignore it until I think it's "safe" to go through security. We don't put anything on the conveyor belt until one of us has a clear path to get through and be there to claim our belongings. Unfortunately, some of the world's scumbags purchase passage on cruise ships, and I know I would be BEYOND upset if someone took off with my camera bag.

I'm the same way. Until my bag(s) start to enter the xray scanner, I won't go through the metal detector. Sometimes they bark at me and I respond that I'm waiting for my bag to go through. Ironically, there have been occasions where I've watched someone start to go through BEFORE their bag does and get stopped and told to wait for their bag. Go figure

As others have said, I hope you actually checked to see if it had been turned in to Lost&Found / Port Security. The fact that it was no longer sitting where you left it doesn't mean it was necessarily stolen.

Another possibility is a sea turtle. They've been known to make off with cameras...

Anything left inside or curbside is turned over to the cruiseline; not the port. The port does not have a lost and found. The security inside the terminal is contracted by the cruiselines.

Call the cruiselines lost and found/lost luggage number.

We usually try to do similar but this particular day was an absolute zoo getting back on the ship. I was before him for just that reason.:) They were pushing bags through and people through quickly up until they started patting down some crew.

Had I not yelled so loud, he was gone. I was going after him even though he was over 6 ft tall and I am barely 5' 4". My Dad was a cop and he always said to cause a commotion and people will notice. Thanks Dad.:)

On the flip side, several years back we were unpacking and I found some lovely costume jewelry in a box in a drawer. I ran down to customer service and gave them our cabin number so they could research it and somehow get it back to its owner. They took it seriously - got an envelope, marked the info, sealed it in front of me and were able to get it off the ship before we left port. I never knew if it made it to its owner but I can tell you that we sure gave it a helluva try.

OP - it could be possible it was turned in to guest services. Can't hurt to check.
