Insurance for medical condition

Hi,

I have a friend who may need to cancel a first cruise because of an illness. Sadly, the insurance company has quoted £800 to insure her hubby for a pre existing medical condition.

Has anyone got the details of a really good company that covers pre existing conditions that I could pass on to them as £800 seemed a bit steep to me.

Thanks for any help you can offer

:)

My insurance company (provided with a fee paying bank account) told me they would not cover me for any premium when I was diagnosed in May this year. I wanted to book a cruise so went seraching. I finished up with Staysure who were not the cheapest but seem to have a reasonable reputation. Going to the Caribbean in January 16 so very much under the US medical system and they are charging me £320 for the trip. Still seems an awful lot but I guess it depends on the illness and how much you want to go. I talked it though with them and they were very supportive. Hope this gives an idea.

If cancellation cover is important, check the small print. When I looked for cover, cancellation was limited to £1500 - this was for any trip booked within one year of being diagnosed (date of booking NOT date of travel). As time went on, amount of cancellation cover increased. I reduced the cost significantly by not having cancellation cover for my illness.

I have found the only way is to shop around. It is very tedious, but will save money in the end. Both myself and partner have pre conditions.

I have changed the insurance company each year for the last 3 years. We are currently with stay sure.

The premiums will increase considerably if going outside Europe, like US or Caribbean.

You wouldn't think it was a lot if you saw our last quote. Now they (Staysure) have refused us cover completely.

There is no logic in the way they assess a premium by a points system. Go above their points limit and your cruising days are over.

Oh I can quite believe it. I am no fan of any insurance company and some of the figures I was quoted were more than the cost of me going on the cruise in a good cabin! What frustrates me so much is that my consultant assures me my risk of claiming is negligable but the insurance companies seem only hear the first word.

I would be cautious about All Clear. We used them for several years and 3 cruises - never had to claim but the premiums were very reasonable and they were very pleasant to deal with. When I was looking for insurance for our upcoming cruise, however, they were v.v. expensive and seem to only do everything over the Internet now, rather than being able to phone them as before. I wondered if they had been taken over, because the whole approach had changed. They also get dreadful reviews and ratings on defaqto.

Our policy for this trip is with Insurance With - great to deal with, very helpful and less than half of the price quoted by All Clear and other insurers. Also great defaqto ratings.

I had medical complications last year and my existing insurer withdrew cover. I was repeatedly told that nobody would insure me.

After much searching I went via a specialist broker who were able to get a quote.

The broker was higos insurance services

Note : I am not connected with them in any way - mods - please delete this if it violates anything

Hi Presto. I see you are off on the Oceana again (as are we :) )

We have our insurance with the bank. It was free when we took in out, but now we are retired we don't have enough in our current account, so have to pay a monthly fee. I wondered if it would be cheaper to pay an annual insurance. I was amazed at how much they quoted and we have no pre-existing conditions :eek:

DH is 78 so we had better book before he is 80, as the bank won't insure him after that! (Hence another cruise booked :) )

My mother is 82 with no pre-existing conditions, and gets annual insurance from Staysure for about £400, including USA. Few other companies do annual policies for over-80's.

We have been with Saga for the past three years. I take tablets for high blood pressure and also have a skin condition and my husband has glaucoma. When our annual policy was coming up for renewal a couple of months ago I started contacting other companies to get quotes. We are both 70 next year, my husband at the beginning of the year and me at the end and we are due to go to the Caribbean again next February. So I needed to change our Europe only policy to Worldwide including USA and Caribbean and that really bumps up the price.

Some companies refused to cover us because by the time we go my husband will be 70. I went to all the usual companies including most of the ones mentioned on here. Eventually I went back to my own company, Saga, and the quote from them was just over £400. I couldn't find a quote from another company anywhere near that so we have stayed with Saga.

We did claim from them last year when my husband had an eye infection and had to visit an eye clinic in Tallin. At that time I hadn't declared his Glaucoma to Saga - just because he's had it for quite a while and it really never occurred to me. He said he was going to claim for the Tallin costs and the P&O medical costs (P&O were brilliant by the way) and I said there was no way Saga would pay as we hadn't declared the Glaucoma. The Consultant in Tallin had said he had a Corneal Infection and it was nothing to do with the Glaucoma - his Consultant back here said the same thing. Well, to my amazement Saga paid up - it wasn't a lot of money - just under £200 I think. Of course when we renewed I declared the Glaucoma and the agent said it made little difference to the amount quoted. I also queried the fact that my husband will be 70 when we go next February and she said that didn't make a difference either. So I think we will be sticking with Saga.

Just a word of warning, we applied to All Clear online and wisely paid extra for a paper copy of the insurance policy. When filling in details there was no question about hospital admissions although we had truthfully filled in details of our medical problems. When I contacted them to advise them that I had been in hospital for a wash out of a knee infection the previous year I was informed that there would not be any difference to the cost of the policy. Some days later I was contacted to be informed that our insurance premium would increase from £600 to over £800. This was for our cruise to USA/Canada. We had no option but to pay up. We will certainly be continuing to pay for a printed copy of a policy.

Also worth bearing in mind that by law you have 14 days - from receipt of policy documents - to change your mind and get a full refund if the policy doesn't meet your needs. Copied this from a legal website....The last sentence is interesting though because if you take out a policy for a cruise in advance, surely the policy lasts longer than a month even if it is a single trip policy...

You may want to cancel an insurance policy if you have just bought it and have changed your mind. By law, you have a minimum 14-day cooling-off period during which you can cancel the policy for any reason. If you’ve bought life insurance, the cooling-off period is 30 days.

The cooling-off period starts from when the policy begins or when you receive your policy documents, whichever is later. You should get a refund of any premiums you have already paid. However, your insurer may take off a small amount to cover days when the policy was in force. They may also charge you a small administration fee.

Some insurers may give you a longer cooling-off period. If you’re not sure how long your cooling-off period is, you can check the terms of your insurance policy.

If you want to cancel your policy during the cooling-off period you should contact your insurer as soon as possible

The right to cancel during a cooling-off period does not apply to travel insurance that lasts less than one month.

Beware MIA. If cruising in Europe if you fall I'll on a day in port they require you to seek local treatment or will not cover your costs. Imagine having to disembark in port when you are I'll not knowing if the ship is going to leave without you.n

Great to chat again :-) We have ours through the bank as well at the moment. Never really trust travel insurance after we lost £1500 due to the small print 10 yrs back. They will always find a loop hole -- or am I being cynical ??!!
