A Newbie Guide to Life On-board

A family friend asked me recently for any tips or hints on life aboard a Regent cruise, knowing that I had been on quite a few.

I produced a list of a few things which I thought would be useful to her and on her return she said how much she enjoyed the cruise and how useful the list was.

Thinking this may be of use to other first time "Regenters", I attach it here.

You did well to get a wine list, I have tried many times and been told many times that there is no so thing!

Sette Marie - I would say that whilst you may request where you want to sit, the staff still make the decision i.e. they "show you to your table".

Lunchtime you just walk in and sit where you want to, no staff show you to your table.

You are expected to wait at the entrance to be escorted to a table in the evening.

One thing that I didn't realize on my first Regent cruise was the scope and usefulness of room service. Regent publicizes getting dinner served course-by-course in your suite, and of course I expected to be able to put a card out for breakfast.

But halfway through the cruise we realized that the suite next door was getting a mikshake delivered every afternoon. That never occurred to us! So we ordered a pair of Kir Royales, and 5 minutes later they arrived.

Our second cruise is approaching, and we intend to take full advantage of room service this time.

  • 4 weeks later...

In La Veranda for breakfast, if you want eggs cooked, you note your table number and give that to the person cooking. I didn't realize this as that doesn't happen on larger ships so I was lurking until they mentioned it - had to go back and look at my table number :D

Thank you, Jonoro. Even though we have sailed Navigator, we have two more Regent cruises booked, your Guide was very useful. The jelly mold on the chain is a tasting cup, hardly ever used, I think.

We enjoy the very noisy trivia time - not that tea time isn't beautiful. We simply cannot partake in sweets, scones and sandwiches so close to when we have supper. On Oceania tea and trivia are done in separate venues which many people do not like since many people that enjoy tea also enjoy trivia. Actually, tea begins 1/2 hour prior to trivia so there is some quiet time in Horizons Lounge.:)

I am one who particularly likes teatime trivia. I don't eat sweets at all, but do enjoy an afternoon cup of tea while doing trivia.

I think the trivia is fun as well although much too noisy. I'd be happier with an hour or forty-five minutes at least of quiet or classical music (nocturnes, adagios, etudes) followed by trivia. Honestly, the noise level is unpleasant but the game is fun.

You are most likely to find the music you are seeking on Oceania. Regent has lovely live music but not what has been described. Everyone has different taste in music so it is difficult to make everyone happy. For the most part, we love the music on Regent (but do not love most of the shows in the theater). Really hoping that some of the entertainment from NCL will find its way onto Regent ships. Hmmmmmm, on the other hand, having never been on NCL, I can only assume that their shows are upbeat and more professional than what we have seen on Regent.

On a more positive note, we found that the sommeliers use the "jelly molds" prior to pouring the higher end wines (i.e. - the ones you pay extra for). The sommeliers know better than to taste the lesser quality wines:-)

Note to self: consider Oceania for music repertoire. There, it's on the wish list although truth to tell, it's been ensconced securely there since Gerry began reporting on her recent cruise.

The music on Navigstor during our January cruise was acutely disappointing from country/western in the elevators at boarding to electric guitar noise at tea time. Or should t say, disappointing from stem to stern.
