Stockholm Advice thread 2015

Can anyone tell me how to get from the port of Frihamnen to the Royal Palace/Gamla Stan by public transport? Bus/ferry/tram? Any guess which would be the easiest? Am planning to have a Stockholm card so I think they are all included!

Desdichado62, have another question for you! My brother and DH & I land Arlands within 20 mins of each other and want to meet before taking a taxi to our hotel. Which would be a good meeting point? Waiting at the baggage carousel area itself or outside? This will our first time in Arlanda, can you please tell me how big the airport is, have absolutely no idea at all. Thanks:)

While the advice given is most likely fine if you are all arriving at Terminal 5 and the baggage claim is joint for the entire T5. Non-Schengen passengers arrive at F Gates and go through passport control prior to entering the area. Schengen passengers proceed directly to baggage claim.

The café mentioned in T5 is most likely the red area marked 53 on the terminal map.

While domestic flights only arrive at T3 and T4, you do have many international flights at Terminal 2 as well, including British Airways, Air France, KLM and Air Berlin.

You can walk between terminals with Sky City being the natural meeting point if passenger arrive at other terminals. The yellow parking busses can also be used for transfers between terminals.

We will be docking at Stadsgarden and plan to take the early HoHo Boat directly to the Vasa Museum. Would anyone know what the cost of the HoHo boat is and if they take credit cards? I hear that following Vasa we can take the HoHo boat to Old Town as well. Is that the easiest way to get to that area from the Vasa? Many thanks.

MADflyer, thanks for the detailed reply. We fly Air France from Paris CDG, so from what you say we should be arriving T2. My brother will be on SAS from Brussels, not sure where this arrives. Both of us would have passed through Schengen passport controls in Paris and Brussels, so I guess we will be considered domestic passengers, isn't it? Would appreciate your comments and tips, thanks again:)

Wow, surprised to see that the HoHO boat to Vasa takes the longest time. We dock at 8AM and were hoping to get to Vasa at their 8:30 opening in June using the direct boat. Would you please advise what transportation for 6 people would be better/faster? Thank you.

Sorry I was a bit unspecific.

TO Vasa, from Stadsgårdskajen S167, HoHo boats will be the fastest but FROM Vasa to Old Town/Royal palace HoHo boats will be the slowest

since they go in a clockwise direction and there are many stops on the way between Vasa and Old Town.

Both HoHo boats companies have maps/schedules on their websites (links in first post).

So from Vasa, use either harbour ferries or bus (see first post for more info and links).

If you prefer to meet in the terminal complex you might want to meet at Sky City which has a large number of cafes and restaurants along with seating areas.

Have been looking into the into Stockholm's subway art and it sure is impressive and amazing. More than likely I will have a Stockholm Card so assume no problems accessing, whether I take a subway or not ?

With the Stockholm card you will be able to roam the subway as you like.

There are many nice stations but judging by the pics I have seen of them my favourites are:

It appears from visiting Stromma & Red Sightseeing's sites that the boats stop running at the beginning of September. Does anyone know if they will run after the regular schedule if ships are in port? We will be arriving September 13th and I am trying to find the best way from Stadsgarden (S167) to Vasa. Any advice would be appreciated!

The advice is to contact the sightseeing boats operators and ask them because they are the only ones that knows for sure.

Whatever the answer is, please share it so that others also may know.

If the answer is negative, I have listed other methods of transport in the first post.

Either bus all the way or bus to Slussen and harbour ferry from there.

Thanks so much for the information. Yes, QuattroRomeo is on our cruise! I've sent a request to one of the boat companies (Red) and am sure they'll get back with me soon. One of the other posters on our roll call has already contacted Stromma and they will not be operating that day.

We would lie to go to the Abba Museum late in the afternoon on May28. Our ship will be docked overnight at Frimhaven(sp?). Can we take a ferry from that area to the Vasa/ Abba area, or should be take a public bus?

We have a timed entry ticket for 4-4:15 PM. We would like to head back to the ship around 7PM to have dinner in the dining room, unless you can suggest something interesting we might do in the early evening and a place to grab a quick bite. We are staying in Gamla Stan for a day before we board the ship and we hope to take a boat ride and see the Nobel Museum at that time. We will see Vasa the morning after we see Abba, and will also return to Gamla Stan for lunch and a stroll on that day too.

There is a boat line from Frihamnen to Djurgården called Sjövägen.

For the trip from Abba museum to the ship, if you can make it to the berth at Allmänna gränd to 17.42 there is a departure with Sjövägen which will bring you to Frihamnen at 18.27.

Obviously there are allot of nice restaurants in Stockholm, particular in Gamla Stan, but I don't have much knowledge about it.

Most of the really nice ones are quite expensive though. There are a few posts about it in the old thread.

The other option is to go by tram/bus (you'll likely need to change at Djurgårdsbron stop).

Use the travelplanner in the first post and search connections from Liljevalchs/Gröna Lund to Frihamnen.

As for the Nobel museum, it is located at Stortorget which is in he northern end of Gamla Stan (close to the Royal Palace).

For transport to Vasa in the morning see info in first post.

I would also recommend you to buy a 3 day travel pass when you arrive in Stockholm.

That way you can travel as you like on the public transport and don't have to worry about finding somewhere to buy a bus ticket.

Our ship arrives in Nynäshamn at 7 am and I assume that we will probably not be able to get off that quickly if we are not doing a ship excursion. The ship departs at 7 pm and we would like to be back by 6 pm the latest.

Also we are arriving on June 13--which I think I saw is the wedding of the Prince at the Royal Palace. What would be impacted by the wedding?

I am wondering if it makes sense to do Stockholm on our own in the time we have and considering the extra time it might take orientating ourselves.

I would like to go to Gamma Stan and possibly the Vasa museum and had thought of the Royal Palace, but now wonder if that would be possible.

I also noted that there is a canal tour--not sure that is worthwhile.

Any other suggestions of what to do with our time, especially if we can not visit the palace?

We are arriving at 7 am and the boat departs at 7 pm, so we would like to be back on the ship by 6 at the latest. Seems like your timing was the same. Did you find that it was enough time too do things on your own?

What did you do on your visit? Should we buy the all day transportation pass?

I also think the inner and outer courtyards will be closed but I am not sure.

It also means that some streets will be closed for traffic which

mean that buses might not be able to get through.

Since you arrive at the central station, I would start with Vasa (bus #69) and then head over the old town (djurgårdsfärjan) in the afternoon.

The only problem is that it might be hard to find anywhere to buy a train ticket.

Possible your only option is to use the official SL tickets app, the tourist office doesn't open until 9am and it would a waste of time to wait so long.

The ticket will be valid for 120 minutes from time of purchase so if you buy the ticket just before you board the commuter train, you should also be able to use the same ticket for the bus to Vasa.

For Djurgårdsfärjan you can buy tickets during the queuing process.

Then from Old town to the central station, the easiest way is to walk
