July 15th Cook and Society Islands Review

July 23rd: Taha'a (Mahana Magnifique)

We went through the usual morning La Palette and Le Grill routine. By the time I got up on deck we were already sailing between Taha'a and Raiatea (6:30am). The hour before arrival is all inside the lagoon and is not to be missed. We had rain for a little bit but it made for a nice rainbow. First tender to the motu is at 10:15 am. The motu is very small and is easy to walk a lap around (15-20 minutes). Motu Mahana has plenty of lounge chairs on the beach, kayaks, several souvenir stands, floating bar, another bar, a buffet area, basically all the bells and whistles. Snorkeling is decent if you go out a little ways from the crowd.

Lunch is served at noon there. The lunch is typical picnic fare with their specialty tuna. There are plenty of tables to eat lunch at with umbrellas. We spent the afternoon talking with other cruisers in the water. There was a group flying a drone on the pier which I caught on camera. I did a few more rounds of kayaking. This is very nice here and gives some nice views of the lagoon and motu. There was a downpour that came through probably around 2pm but cleared out quickly and by 2:30pm I was playing sand volleyball with fellow cruisers. By this time, my mom had already taken the tender back to the ship while I made my way to the bar on the motu for another drink before everything closed at 3:30pm. My dad went on the 4pm tender but I had no intention of leaving until they dragged me on the boat.

Tip (for any photographers out there): The motu really clears out once the bar closes at 3:30pm. You can stay on the motu until 4:30pm. Take advantage of this golden hour.

I was the first one on the motu and the very last one on the last tender at 4:30pm. I literally rode back with the bags of towels placed on top of me. "Towel duty" was worth every last minute at this place though and my summary of this place ends with one piece of advice... Ride back with the towels.

We got back onboard the ship at 5pm and Santa Rosa was playing a sail away set on the pool deck. I recorded their "surfer girl" performance for my slideshow. YES! I wish they did more activities like this on the pool deck! The weather was amazing for the sail away and sunset tonight. I have named this sunset the signature sunset of the July 15th. The Bora Bora backdrop makes this one jaw-dropping. We ran into a Windstar ship as we passed the Taha'a church that almost everyone photographs.

Les Gauguines performed at 6:30 in the piano bar.

Tip: I suggest you familiarize yourself with their music before you head off to your cruise. At least know the songs Fakateretere, Tapa'o No Te Here, and Pahoho and briefly what they mean. As these are important songs that are frequently played there.

We had dinner at Le Etoile and I ordered shrimp salad , banana bisque, mahi mahi, and a chocolate truffle.

Santa Rosa played again at 8:30 and 10:15... we listened to both sets.

Tonight was the passenger talent show. The highlights were a french singer that sang It's Now or Never and a french dancer that danced to a Michael Jackson tune. This is a take it or leave it show though really.

The day ends with going down to the piano bar to write my notes and hang out with Rey.

Slide show immediately following and then my Moorea review next.

July 24th: Moorea (Green Pearl)

Moorea is an island that is very much worth an early start. The latte with the sunrise and mountains of Moorea coming into view is spectacular. We got on the first tender at 8:30. A little ways away from the ship a pod of dolphins decided to perform for us. I was already amazed without having set foot on the island yet. There is a decent amount of shopping set up at the pier which is good for some entertainment when waiting for the return tender.

We were shuttled to Albert's Car Rental (our car rental selections are thanks to TBK's recommendations) and we were on the road by 9:30am. Our first stop was the IC Moorea to see the turtle exhibit and there was a swim with the dolphin program that we saw in the distance.

Our second stop was the Belvedere Lookout. It is spectacular... probably the #1 attraction of this island. On the way back down we stopped by the agricultural school and the ruins. These are quick stops. On the way back down we pulled over at the stop sign and took some photos of Opunohu Bay looking out toward the ship.

Next we stopped at a local market and did some shopping in Maharepa. This is probably the biggest shopping center of the island.

My big souvenir from this island actually came from the Green Pearl Golf Club. I am an avid golfer and wanted a golf souvenir there. I bought a golf shirt and it is a beauty... as it should be for the sticker shock price of $92 USD. I really was interested in playing this course but my parents were driving and they did not care to. If I get a next time, there will probably be a tee time.

We ended up missing the turn for Temae beach and doing Toatea lookout first. It is spectacular and you can see Tahiti in the background. Temae has crystal clear water complete with a view of the bungalows at Sofitel on the other end. Temae is definitely worth a beach stop.

Most everything for tourists is on the north side of the island. We barely stopped at all on the south side of the island. We circled back around and got to walk around the Hilton visible from the ship and then dropped our car off and went back to the ship at 4. We were hungry and food was s a little hard to come by at this hour onboard other than room service.... unusual as normally we would run into food without even trying with staff bringing trays around of goodies.

Santa Rosa did a sunset party by the pool. Yes! I love these festivities to accompany my sunset photos.

Tahitian night crafts began at 6:30 with the Les Gauguines performing in the hallway by the casino and piano bar.

All three restaurants have the same menu on this night and it is in my opinion one of the best. I ordered Poisson Cru for laughs among the gang (I had to after being the one to stir it up in Huahine), Shrimp Soup, Salad, 3 lobster tails (yes 3 of them), and for a strong finish... two chocolate fondants.

There was a Polynesian dance show at 9:30. Santa Rosa did there usual 10:15 performance. There was a lot more action at these late sets on the overnight days and it was nice to see. This group deserves it. I made sure to go out and look at the stars and the port at night before returning down to the piano bar to hang out with Rey (they need someone to occupy the bar seats right?) and write down my review notes.

Well that is the first Moorea day. Slide show next and then the last day onboard.

July 25th: Moorea and Tahiti (The Sunset Swansong)

After the usual breakfast routine, we were tendered to the pier at 9:15am for our final tour. We then took a boat to the InterContinental Moorea to begin our Catajet tour. Our tour guide first led us to a site where we got to swim with the sharks and stingrays. I have never done this before so this alone was worth the price of admission. The guide held a stingray to give us a chance to pet one. The sharks were swimming around in numbers and was awesome watching them. After about twenty minutes we climbed back in the catajet and started towards an empty motu. One of the catajets broke down on this part of the tour (not ours for a change). Another boat pulled it along to the motu. This probably gave us more time on the motu which is a plus. They worked on the catajet there but I believe there continued to be problems with it for the rest of the tour. I thought this was a good tour for the sole reason of not having swam with the sharks and sting rays before it and it is scenic... if you have already done this then maybe give this one a pass. It does get everyone back to the ship early to get everything situated on the last day though.

We were back onboard by 1pm, there was a lot of shrimp for lunch at Le Grill which is fine by me. I noticed it was now 2:30pm and it was now or never to try kayaking from the ship's marina (closes up for good at 4pm when leaving Moorea).

Be advised that water sports from the marina are tougher than they are made out to be. Currents and winds can easily drift you 100 yards away from the ship in the time it takes to pull out the camera and snap a couple photos and videos of Opunohu bay. Is it worth it? Definitely! Just watch your distance from the ship very carefully and know your limits.

Afterwards, I returned my snorkel gear and had a couple drinks on the pool deck. The sail away is at 5pm. There is a farewell party which is also held at 5pm. The only problem with this is that they held it in the Grand Salon when there is a sail away and sunset happening. Why was this not on the pool deck like the festivities on the other days and like the videos of them doing the farewell song on the stairs? Ah well, I missed that one but the sail away was fantastic. The view is best from the back of the ship first with the bay and then it is off to the sun deck to get the mountains on one side and the sunset on the other. There was some scattered distant rain clouds and a rainbow at one point which made for a good show. By 6pm it was getting dark and time to get ready for dinner. We were all in the piano bar one last time before dinner. Rey told me to get on deck to watch the arrival into Papeete (cue up Michael Franks's Tahitian Moon song) with the city lights coming back into view. By 6:45 we were sailing alongside Tahiti's main road and back at the pier by 7pm. What a full circle... I remember watching the ship come in 11 nights ago while we were at the food trucks... now we were the ones staring at Papeete from the ship. I have to say the whole vibe changes onboard with the thuds of the ship getting tied back to the Papeete pier.

We had one last group dinner in Le Etoile and I ordered scallop salad, kiwi soup, prime rib, tuna, and double chocolate truffles.

Now it was time to get the farewell pictures and then get to the last show at 9:30. This is a fantastic show with the best Tahitian performers. We loved the show.

Santa Rosa did their final performance for us at 10:15. There actually were a lot of people at the disco afterward maybe because it was hitting that this was it.

The night ended at around midnight after making my way down to the Piano Bar to write down my notes.

Slide show to follow and then my review of my two-day post-cruise at InterContinental Tahiti.

July 26th: Tahiti (Walking the Plank)

Well, July 26th had come and it was "walk the plank" morning. I say that jokingly but there is some truth there in that after sunrise and breakfast nothing is running and it is depressing onboard. The gift shop is open and we made one last stop there for souvenirs. The only place I could get my last drink was La Palette which was still serving champagne. For cruise-only people, the latest you can stay on is 10am. We swiped our card and got our last photos with the crew, walked the plank, and picked up our bags... this all takes maybe five minutes. Our taxi was there waiting for us. I got my last photo and look of the ship because it may be many years before I can pull a trip like this off again.

Twenty minutes later, we were back at the InterContinental. Now I have to say, this part is not that bad. Most everyone that was on the cruise was there for the day. We went with some friends to see Le Marche and downtown (stopped at a McDonalds... nothing says "Walk the Plank Day" like McDonalds), and stopped for food for the next day at the resort. We returned to the resort and spent the afternoon by the pool. The room was unfortunately not ready until the standard 3pm this time.

5:30pm rolled around and we got a drink to enjoy the sunset and got some photos.

We spent the evening with some friends and went to the Tiki Bar for a pizza for dinner and then listened to the band by the pool. I was so tired at this point that I was already gone by the pool. I was woken up at 9:45pm to say farewell to everyone. This really is clear-out night for cruisers. It was really nice to have one more day though.

We took a night lap of the resort at 10pm which was peaceful and then it was off to sleep.

Slide show next and then the series finale.

July 27th-July 28th: Tahiti (E Mauruuru A Vau Polynesia):

July 27th: InterContinental Tahiti

Rise and shine was at 6am for my final day in the islands. We took advantage of the free coffee station and walked the grounds. My dad and I did some kayaking to get some water views of the bay, bungalows, and resort which was impressive. We spent the day by the pool and ate turkey and cheese on baguettes that we got from the Carrefour on the previous day. We got several free drink coupons from our friends which definitely helped today along. We got one of the pineapple ice cream coladas for the road as we walked toward the bungalows at 5pm. We talked a half an hour with friends at their bungalow and then I made my rounds for the final sunset. The final sunset was a great one with a golden glow which was amazing by the Le Lotus Pool. My sunset rounds ended with the signature third floor balcony view. We got ready for dinner and ate at the Te Tiare restaurant. I think I got chicken tenders or something along the lines.... have I mentioned that disembarkation is terrible? We went to the Tiki Bar afterwards as their was crafts setup for their Heiva Festival show tonight. July is an amazing time to be here in these islands! This festival going on all over the islands really adds a lot to a stay here! We used up our coupons while listening to the band and then walked over to watch some of the Heiva festival show. It is free to watch from the sidewalk. This went on until 10pm. After 10pm, there was nothing to do but finish off my notes for the day and call it a night. All that was left, unbelievably, was the return flight home the next morning.

July 28th: The I Hate Reality Day

How is that for a fancy title?

Reality chimes in with a 4:30am wake up call. We roll our suitcases down at 5am to check out and at 5:15am we are in a taxi to the airport. By 5:25am we were in line at the Air France check in counter which went very quickly. There was a souvenir store before security that is actually pretty good. Security was lightning fast and we ran into some familiar faces waiting for our flight back to LAX. We boarded the plane at 7 and we were off right around 7:30. They served Tuna onboard for lunch which was delicious actually and then a snack before landing which was like baguettes, fruit, yogurt, and a muffin. That should have been served first as breakfast though. Movies and entertainment is great for an airplane here. I would fly Air France again without hesitation if I happen to be going where they fly again.

We arrived at LAX just before seven and the race was on to make a 9:30pm united flight. Customs took about an hour to get through. It was thirty minutes walking at a brisk pace to the united terminal from TBIT. Check in and security took another thirty minutes. That puts us at arriving at the gate just before boarding started. For anyone trying to risk tight connections. This needs to be classified as the perfect day at LAX. Our flight was on-time, customs and check-in lines moved quickly, bags came up fast on the carousel.... you name it. In other words, you need one more hour at least than we did or a plan B for when you possibly miss flight because I get the feeling this scenario does not happen very often.

The journey ends in gloomy ole Cleveland Hopkins at 5am on July 29th. We got home by 7am and I slept for about two days almost non-stop.

Mauruuru roa for joining me for my "Polynesian Odyssey 2017" series. It truly was an adventure of a lifetime and here is to hoping that life is kind enough to get me back onboard before too many years.

The next post will contain my entire slide show series. I am here to take comments and questions so please post away. Mauruuru again and please enjoy the slide shows. :D

I am glad that you are finding this review helpful. I believe that there is a lot of value of seeing a review from someone who is completely new to Paul Gauguin and who had VERY high expectations of this trip with the amount of time and energy it took to pull it off. It was the trip of a lifetime, they did it! ... except

The only thing that surprised me, I would not have guessed though that my one and only point of disappointed was with their execution of Bora Bora day #1 and the uncertainty until late that night for Bora Bora day #2 (the island of my dreams). It was like them performing a masterpiece song perfectly and then screeching painfully on the high note.

Hi Brandon - Thoroughly enjoyed your travelogue and appreciate the work put into your audio/visual links. Especially enjoyed the sunrises each day and the way you captured the local people in your photos. Thank you. You mentioned a few times that you were not sure when you would/could return. I can tell from your review that the flu may have claimed another. The first time my husband and I visited we thought it was a trip of a lifetime... thankfully we are returning soon for our ninth cruise aboard the PG. It's funny how your priorities shift after experiencing heaven on earth. Mauruuru Roa

The flu is a bad one. I will be back as soon as it is possible.

On a side note, I asked for an email for Claudine the cruise director while onboard so that I can share my videos with her and it appears that she seems to have given me a bad email. As far as I'm concerned that is either careless or disrespectful. While I personally did not have a problem with her onboard, this seems tacky either way.

It was an omission of one letter on the email address written on the coaster given to me. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt... I hope they at least get acknowledged.

Or it could be just an honest mistake? I'm sure there's somebody who could get her email address for you.

Contact Vanessa Bloy at PG cruises and she will put you in touch with whoever you want to contact.

Questions about the room. Where do you store your luggage? Do the cabins have 220 or 110 outlets? Thanks!

Luggage can be stored underneath the bed and there were two closets with hangers for clothes. The ship has both 220 and 110 outlets. IC Tahiti does too but not as many. If you know you are going to have a lot of stuff to charge or plug in just bring a power bar.

A word of caution for the adapter folks, just plugging in a plug that allows an American plug into a 220 volt outlet is a wonderful way to ruin your device. You must have a 220 to 110 volt converter or your device needs to be able to take 220 volts... just read your labels carefully if you are using 220 volt outlets. I prefer the power bar over that method for that reason.
