Binoculars for Alaska Cruise July 2017 with pre-cruise Denali and post-cruise Vancvr

I have a pair of lightweight Bushnell 10x24 (about 9 ounces) and a pair of bushnell waterproof 8x42 (a little over 1.5 lbs).

Is it reasonable to pack the heavier pair in checked baggage for use only while onboard and use the lightweight pair for off-ship excursions?

I have never been to Alaska, so not sure if it's worth the annoyance to pack the heavier weight pair in my carryon for a "riverboat discovery cruise" and "denali natural history tour"

Thanks in advance

I will take my heavier binoculars to Denali. If the Denali Natural History tour is the "included" tour on your cruise, consider taking the shuttle bus tour from the Denali Visitor center instead. $34 pp takes you all the way to Eielson Center, 66 miles into the park. Not a guided tour, but the drivers are more than willing to share much information. The best bargain in all of Alaska! Look it up on trip advisor for reviews.
