Antarctica- Question re. boots

We will cruise to Antarctica soon and will rent boots through Seabourn.

Wondered if anyone who has previously done this cruise can help?

Are the boots solely for use on Antarctica? Is it possible to wear them on deck in wet weather or on shore excursions in other ports?

We are hoping to leave our waterproof hiking boots at home in the interest of lightening our luggage.

On our 2014 cruise to Antarctica the hire boots were left in lockers at the stern of the ship on Deck 5 ? where we picked them up on the way to the Zodiacs to go ashore and then returned when we returned

There were comments about having boots in your cabin after walking where the penguins have dropped their droppings wouldn't be the best of smells to have in the cabin with you, and that was a very good reason to use the hire boots and not your own

We left our hiking boots at home and just wore comfortable rubber soled leather shoes around the decks and onshore. We wore "Crocs" (clogs) from our cabin to deck 5 aft to put on our hired boots.

We were on the first cruise of the second season and we had ice and snow on the decks some of the time whilst in Antarctica, we didn't have a problem wearing our shoes

Surprisingly there were a few using the pool/spa/jacuzzi on our cruise

The front spa was quite popukar

With the wearing of shoes to deck 5 I eventually used the slippers from our suite..

Hi The cat.,,,

Nope only one day with snow on deck and that was the caviar on ice.... maybe we were a hardy lot :)

The real reason you can't take the boots into the ship proper is that at the end of each Antarctic day they are each individually disinfected. There are no diseases on the 7th continent and Seaboard don't want to be the first to do so. We start our Antarctic cruise for this year tomorrow -- from Montreal
