Shuttle to airport from pier in Kahului and Hilo

It has been mentioned before there are shuttles from the pier to the airport so that you may get a rental car. Can anyone confirm that this service is available at both Kahului and Hilo? Thank you!

In Hilo there are rental car shuttles & we use the Enterprise off airport location (cheaper than at airport) which is a short distance from the pier on the road to Volcanoes NP.

I haven't arrived by ship in Kahului (only Lahaina but didn't need a car) and have read many times about people using the airport shuttles.

Yes, there are shuttles from most of the major agencies. As said before, Enterprise is not at the airport, but you call them and they will come and get you.

A great place to reserve your rental cars is Discount Hawaii Rental Car https://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/cruiseshipreservation.shtml

In the description for each "brand" it will say if the agency sends shuttles.

You should rent a car on each island earlier rather than later. The prices increase with the increased demand.

Just a reminder that you will need a rental reservation in order to ride the shuttles, so make one in advance, and probably as far out as possible for the best price.

Rental prices are going to vary greatly from company to company. "Enterprise" may be less expensive at Costco than DHCR, but that does not mean Enterprise is the best deal out there for your date. We use DHCR because it gives us 2nd driver free, we pay nothing at booking, we are free to cancel and rebook at any time if we find a price drop, no penalties. Find the best price within the category you want, full size etc., and then join the Loyalty Club for that company after booking. It will get you into the fast track line at the counter.

Costco offered the same benefits & was cheaper than DHCR but it's always good to compare multiple booking sources.

In Hilo the off airport Enterprise location was cheapest; in Kauai it was Alamo at the airport. Great suggestions to join rental car loyalty clubs for faster service & to book early which is very important in areas such as Lahaina where the much more limited supply than at Kahului results in higher prices or no availability.

AF made a good point about being a loyalty club member. I remember when in Kahului there were long line ups at the air port (Thrifty) as everyone has the same idea of getting their rental car ASAP after docking. Being a Blue Chip Loyalty member paid off as there was no one in the line up for loyalty members.

As previously mentioned, make sure you join the loyalty program of whichever company you rent from so that you spend less time picking up AND returning the car. Also, if you are traveling with others who will want to drive, one of the benefits of DHCR is they usually include 1-2 extra drivers free of charge. Even specific car rental company websites did not include the extra driver benefit like DHCR. Last year we ended up cancelling Costco reservations because we later received better rates and benefits through DHCR. It doesn't hurt to make reservations early because they can be cancelled. You just have to check everything. Have fun. Cherie
