I really wanted to have a port side cabin w/ a balcony for a May 2011 Alakskan cruise on the Coral. Was offerred cabin B730 as my only choice through my TA. Does anyone see that this would be OK or not a great location. It is really AFT. I am wondering if I went to Princess directly if they would have better selection of cabins. Thoughts ? (I have never cruised myself, so don't know much about aft or midship or forward- BUT am on the Ruby Sept 2nd.as my 1st cruise!!) This cruise I am buying as a gift, so I want to be sure the cabin is decent!:)

I read your posting with great interest. My wife and I always book an aft cabin, not on the side, but truely on the aft. Without knowing when you booked the cruise, it may have been possible that the cabin you have was the only port side balcony available. It would not have mattered if you booked with Princess or a cruise specialist, they would have had the same selection. The Coral Princess does not have true aft cabins, meaning the cabins are truely on the aft(the rear end).

Getting back to the aft, as I mentioned earlier, my wife and I always book the true aft cabin. We find it to be totally relaxing. The beauty and colors of the wake of the ship, the sound of the water and the panoramic views. We sometimes chock our balcony door open at night so we can just hear the water.

We just recently took a 9 night cruise on the Caribbean Princess (RT New York) and had a true aft cabin, there is nothing more spectacular than cruising out of NY harbor and then under the Verazano Narrows Bridge. Also, when you leave each port you have this panoramic view of the ports.

We are cruising the Emerald Princess July 7 '11 on a 11N Scandanavian cruise, then moving on to a 12N Med cruise on the new Carnival Magic July 24 '11, and guess what, we are in a true aft cabins for both cruises.

Aft cabins are not for everyone, but for us, there is no cabin like it. Try one once, I'm sure you will always take a true aft again.

Enjoy your cruise on the Ruby!!

We always try to book aft cabins for the reason stated above but one other advantage is they are very private not alot of foot traffic on them. Enjoy

The Coral and the Island do not have any aft facing cabins.

Ok I guess my cruising ignorance is shining through right about now!!;) I guess what I mean is that the cabin the offered me is portside but way towards the back about 3 cabins or so from the last cabin on that side. I was really hoping to find one more midship but maybe it doesn't matter...I really don't know. the thing is, as I said I am purchasing this cruise for my folks who always wanted to do an Alaskan cruise but have never cruised before either. I want it to be special and am worried about the cabin location. Should I be? Baja 730- balcony. Is there a big difference between having a cabin towrds the front, midship or way towards the back??????? :o

This is a great site for both ships.

I think that location would be fine, we prefer more aft cabins.

There is a great viewing area at the back of each deck.

Those cabins that look aft are oceanview and don't have a balcony. They look out on the aft deck. If you go out the door by B734, there is a wonderful covered deck with comfy lounge chairs. We loved spending time there when we were on the Coral. In Alaska, balconies can get very cool and windy. The aft area is not nearly as windy as the side of the ship. I think your parents will enjoy the cabin you have chosen and will really enjoy the aft area also. Alaska is amazing. I hope your parents have a wonderful cruise.

We always book our cabins toward the back of the ship for a couple of reasons:

1) Much less traffic going by outside the cabin, which equals more quiet.

2) Less motion. I know, I know, people say the midship area is the most stable, but we have found DH, who suffers from seasickness, does not get sick in aft cabins, but does in midship cabins.

From our experience the more aft locations are smoother than the forward cabins. Personally we like mid and back always avoiding the cabins toward the front base on our one bad experience toward the bow. Bottom line is that I think they will enjoy the location.

Here is a Pict. from our Aft cabin on the Carnival Destiny. If we can get one of these cabins we snag them. On the Jewel of the Seas, our group had all 5 aft cabins on deck 8. This is quiet from people walking because there is no outside access.

The only noise we really had was the typical engines and the prop wash. I personally like the sound of the prop wash.

I hope this helps for future cruises.

Just got off the Golden and had the cabin Baja 729. So same cabin you are talking about just on the right side of the ship. I am not sure how the Coral and Golden compare but our cabin had a balcony and we LOVED it. I would book this cabin again in a heartbeat. The balcony was covered and the location of the cabin toward the back allowed for less foot traffic (as other's have noted). If the Coral and the Golden are similar then I say good for it!

May 2011 is still a long time away and you can look on most travel agencies sites to see what is available and what you may like better. Midship is what most newer cruisers like since there is less movement there and a shorter walk to what you want to do. Princess.com also shows what is available. Just act like you are booking a cruise to get to the point of choosing a cabin and then you can see what your choices are. The main thing experienced cruisers check for is what is above and below them. We personally like being closer to the aft and one of these days will sail in a true aft facing cabin. Good luck - there should be plenty of cabins available as we are also booking in May but on the Golden Princess.

We did the land/ sea cruise last Sept on the Island. We booked the Caribe 727. There was the secret balcony on the back that was awesome. Were able to view from our balcony as wellas the secret deck.

WOW, we had the exact same room - C727 on the Island Princess for our Alaska cruise in May 2009. We just booked Alaska again for May 2011 on the Coral Princess with the same room because we loved it so much!

We also loved the secret back deck that hardly anyone knew about. As you know, from our balcony, we could see everything from the side of the ship as well as the back of the ship. Great way to view the scenery! We spent most of our time on the ship right out there on our balcony. :)

Everyone is different in their cabin preferences, but we had room 727 on the Caribe deck and loved it so much we booked the same room on our next trip in May 2011. Our room was the very last/back room on that level and we absolutely loved it! There were two occasions that I felt just a slight rolling motion during the night when the ship picked up speed a little bit, but it was actually rather calming and lulling while sleeping. Otherwise, we really didn't feel any motion - even while spending most of our time on the ship out on our balcony.

We were a little farther forward on the Coral in B628. You are in the calm inside passage for all but one day of the cruise. I have used SCOP patches in the past but did not need them on our cruise. Your parents will be very close to the great viewing area on the Aft of Baja deck - the best "secret deck" IMHO. I spent much of the time in Glacier Bay National Park there. We were on the last aft cabin on the starboard side of Caribe deck, C743, on the Star in South America and did not need the patch through the Chilean Inside Passage.

My husband and I absolutely love the "true aft" cabins. It's actually the only thing we've ever booked. But if we were not getting a "true aft", I would absolutely consider whether I would want to be in the rear of the ship due to the long walk you have back and forth to the elevators to get anywhere else on the ship. It's just not a quick walk back to your cabin from anywhere. On one cruise, they would disembark at each port through a forward gangway and the ship was turned so we had to walk all the way back past the aft to get into the terminal. It was a very long walk each way and we were just pooped after touring all day. It's just something to consider if booking for someone else or if you've never sailed before.
