Where are the quietest cabins?

Hello,

I'm a first-time cruiser, and am wondering where the quietest cabins are on the ship. We don't care much about having an oceanview or a balcony since we plan on only using the cabin to sleep. Thus, we want to ensure we get quality sleep so we are energized to view the ocean during the day!

The 2 ships we are choosing between are the Grandeur of the Seas and the Celebrity Century.

Do the lowest decks have loud engine noises?

If you are in an inside room, can you hear a lot of noise from the hallway or the rooms next to you?

Can you hear noises if the restaurant or theater is right above you?

What about if the restaurant or theater is right below you?

A lot of the cheaper rooms are near the elevator- is it louder there?

What areas of the boat would wake you up from the swaying or movement of the boat?

Thanks in advance!

The dynamics of cabin choices will vary widely from ship to ship. I have been on the Century and other RCI ships in the same class as the Grandeur.

First for the Grandeur. Since you are only interested in an inside cabin your best bet would be a deck 3 or deck 7 cabin. There are interior cabins with a separate hallway on deck 3. The deck 7 cabins are on the main hallway.

In either case you want to book a cabin midship. The general rule of thumb is lowest deck and midship for the most stable ride. However the quietest cabins are on the "sandwich" decks. Those have only cabins above and below. One exception to this general rule is a cabin above an area like deck 6 on the Grandeur above the theatre or a lounge. For the quietest cabins on deck 3 you do not want to be under the restaurant so look for cabins 3045-3075 on the port side, any of the interior cabins 3749-3765, and cabins 3545-3577. On deck 7 look at port cabins 7045-7069 and starboard 7545-7569. There may be storage areas for the cabins stewards along both corridors so when you are looking at a deck plan and see a void try booking a cabin not adjacent to any opening in the deck plan.

On several RCI cruises on this class ship there has been entertainment in the atrium which will filter up to every deck above deck 4 that is why I think the interior cabins on deck 4 will be best. This will not be an issue on deck 3.

On the Century the deck 8 cabins to avoid are above the casino and lounge. The cabins 8062-8125 would be best. All of the interior cabins on deck 9 are fine.

Avoid a connecting cabin if you are a very light sleeper.

The normal sea movements will actually enhance your sleep. There is nothing better than being gently rocked to sleep.

For the ships you have chosen the price is determined by deck not cabin location. This is not true of all ships or all cruise lines. The lower decks are often less expensive. I would recommend that you go for the largest cabin you can afford. The smallest cabins on the Grandeur are fairly tight so think about a J, K, or L. The interior cabins on the Century are the same size as the L or the Grandeur.

I hope this has helped and you pick your sailing and return to Cruise Critic for all of the assistance you wish.

No cabin on ANY ship is completely quiet....you WILL hear as folks pass in the hallway---there's just no getting around that.

If seas are rough, the cabinet (and the pre-fab room itself) will tend to squeak and creak....so there's a "noise source" right there

Being near the elevators is a plus...not a negative!

As I posted earlier I have sailed on the Century.

Cabin 8055 should be just fine. You may hear a little noise in the hallway when the theatre ends a performance, but lately the shows have not all been late for the second seating diners. It should not be any problem in your cabin.

Cards09, as for your cabin you should also be fine. Do you hold an inside cabin? In the past we have always enjoyed the soft music and ambiance of Michael's Club. I know that every now and then the facility may be booked for a private function but usually this is earlier in the evening. The Martini Bar used to serve a sampler that you should try. I don't even drink hard liquor but the chocolate martini is fantastic.

Both cabins should be just fine. And, if you are the least bit concerned take ear plugs. I take the kind that they used to hand out at Hoover Dam, but it isn't for ship noises, it's for my DH's earth shattering snoring. A cabin over a bar without him wouldn't require any muffling!!!

Hello Bubbejan,

Looks like you've drawn the short straw. Two of your next door (8057) neighbours on the cruise are from Scotland. But I'm a Scottish gentleman - the definition of which is: One who knows how to play the bagpipes, but doesn't. My wife and I look forward to meeting you.

We'll be delighted to meet you--with or without bagpipes!! Our cruise, 25 October Transatlantic from Barcelona , has an active message board on the Roll Call Forum. You should join in and post your information--we have about 60 folks registered for the cruise connections party.

Now remember, no wild late night parties in your cabin, or if you do have them, make sure we're included!

Good Evening,

Rest assured - there will be no wild late night parties. The drink gave me up many years ago. But I've since learned I don't need it to enjoy myself. The better half and I cruised from San Diego to Hawaii last year and had a smashing time with our dining table mates - two from San Diego and two from St Louis. We really appreciated their warm US welcome. And I'm sure that same hospitality will be evident this time. I'll sign up in roll call in a wee while. Best Wishes....j.d.
