Military discount on ALL cruises??

Recommended Posts

Do all bookings give the military discount?? I noticed that when I do a "fake" booking some include it and some do not. I thought military was given to all bookings. Am I wrong??

Not on RCI. It's totally random as decided by RCI. Princess applies it to every sailing.

Thanks,

Not all sailings and not even all categories on a sailing.

Thanks for your responses. I think this sort of "stinks". If one cruise line can do it why not all the others? We have a booking with Princess and get the military discount. Our Aug. booking on the Adventure doesn't include it. Our TA is checking it out. I doubt we'll get it but worth a try. Thanks again.

I am a military retiree and I have only received the discount once and I just happened to be in the category of room that was receiving it for that cruise because as Bob said most of the time it is not given to every category on the same cruise.

Same goes for the police rate. Totally random. RCI is not alone in their discounting practices.. Some contemporary lines don't even offer discounts.

Seriously, I'd stick with Princess if you get the discount there. I also think it should be on all sailings.

Our son and his family asked us to go with them on the Aug. cruise!! We're going (making memories). We usually go to NC on a family vacation (10 yrs.) however, grandkids involved in activities so not this year!! We do like RCI (Diamond) but also like Princess for their itineraries. We enjoy cruising and being retired we can go when we choose. We are truly blessed.

Enjoy your day.

Princess and RCI have different offerings for Military members.

RCI occasionally offers a Military Rate on selected cruises. It's not a discount off a current rate but a special rate. It's similar to a Senior, Resident, Police and/or Fire rate.

The Princess Military Benefit is offered on all cruises in the form of OBC.

Cruise Length Amount

14 days or longer $250 per qualified passenger

7 - 13 days $100 per qualified passenger

6 days or less $50 per qualified passenger

no. in fact we have never scored a military rate on any Royal cruise.

Princess offers a blanket OBC applicable to all cruises once your information is on their system. they are about the only ones who offer something on EVERY booking.

sorry but this is a major pet peeve of mine. we are not entitled to a discount just because we serve/d. and just because one company offers it does not mean that all must. you want to patronize only those businesses that do so, that's your prerogative. but I won't boycott anyone if they do not. hell we do not even ask any more. if it is an up front offer or advertisement, we will take advantage, but we feel it is not necessary to request(or demand as I have seen some people do) .

Sadly NO. I have found very few cruises in which a military discount is given. You are more likely to find resident discounts.. VERY sad to this retired military person...:(

We have gotten the military rate several times, but it's very random. Carnival often offers a military rate, not on every sailing, but more often than RCI. And the best part is that it's a permanent part of DH's profile on both Princess and Carnival so it comes up automatically on every booking.

To me this whole military discount, whether it be Lowes, Home Depot and/or RCCL, etal, is totally blown out of proportion; in my opinion the only veterans that should be honored or entitled should be from World War II through Vietnam by reason of the end of the draft; all other individuals from that time forward have joined the armed services by their own choice and it should be classified a regular job.

On our previous cruises I think only one I was able to use any discount.

You are entitled to your opinion, because of the men and women who now chose to volunteer to serve to keep your freedoms. Those service members that as u say have volunteered to have that regular job keep you free please don't ever forget that!!!!

I'm sorry, I didn't want to comment but....

Wow, so my time in 2 gulf wars, refugee camps that housed over 100,000ppl and 2 peacekeeping tours shouldn't be honoured? I don't care about entitlements but that's truly low.

War is war and as a medic/pa, who has seen 100 to 1000ppl die a day for months - the front lines and casualties are just the same now as they were back then.

So, ya, your regular day job I guess...

Sigh. Oh, friend. A service member who has serves overseas in a war zone for 12 months at a time, exposed to extreme danger, and you call that a "regular job"?

Leaving family and friends behind, missing out on the lives of spouses and missing the milestones of their children, making sacrifices to serve our country? The LEAST these folks are entitled to is a lousy 10% discount.

To the companies like Princess, Home Depot, Anheuser-Busch, etc, who offer a discount: it's a small act that makes the service member and his/her family feel appreciated in a country that overall HAS NO IDEA what service members and their families go through.

To those of you who serve: THANK YOU. To those of you who love someone who serve: THANK YOU. We live in the greatest country on this planet protected by brave citizens and I, for one, will never take that for granted.

Have a great day, everyone.

I don't think anyone talked about boycotting. But I am much more likely to patronize places that offer a military discount. And I ALWAYS ask. Am I entitled to it? No, but there is nothing wrong with trying to give your business to companies who appreciate their customer base.

Case in point: we went to Florida with our kids. At Sea World, we were given 4 free admissions (like a $200+ value) and were personally thanked and had our hands shaken as we were escorted in. It's just NICE to know people recognize that sacrifice.

Disney, on the other hand, doesn't offer any discount on their own. So, we pay full price and go. I have to admit I wondered, would it kill Disney to offer 10% or even 20% off a ticket price to thank service members? So that these people can save a little money (cause TRUST ME they make less)? Nope, I'm not "entitled" to a discount everywhere but it sure makes what is often a REALLY LOUSY job feel like it matters to other people once in a while.

I just typed and deleted several responses that most likely would have gotten me thrown of Cruise Critic. I'll just say it's very sad people exist in this great country to say such awful things.

And it is one of the strengths of our country that people have the freedom to be able to speak their minds.

We have been able to take advantage of the military discount on Royal more often than the resident discount. On average it has been much higher than the Princess discount.

And military families have my admiration and gratitude. My niece and her husband have spent a third of their married life apart as he has served two tours in Afghanistan, 2 in Iraq and one on the Korean DMZ. His first tour in Iraq, a third of the men in his squadron lost their lives. My niece could not hear from him for four months. A "regular job" does not demand this level of sacrifice from those who serve and the families who support them. Thank you to all who serve.

When I started this post the question I asked was about the military discount on RCI and wondered why they didn't offer it on all of their cruises!! That was the intent of the post! I asked a simple question. I never thought I would get so many responses of different opinions. I thank all of you for your responses.

I want to make this clear I never intended to boycott any cruise line or book on a particular one for "discounts". We have over 20 cruises and the times we got "perks" or "discounts" are few! If we want a particular itinerary we book no matter what cruise line.

Also, to those of you that have served in the military I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I have family members and close friends who have served and some retired. Some have come back with "issues" and are now trying to deal with all that they have encountered while serving this country and letting us live "free". It is to those of you that really deserve "discounts" no matter where you shop or vacation (just my opinion).

I hope you all enjoy your day.

Carol
