Hesitant cruiser coming, help!

My kids (16, 15, 5) and I are all very excited about our cruise in 16 days but my DH is not "excited/looking forward to" the cruise. I cruised 11 years ago, once, but this is the first time for everyone else. We went with a short 5 day cruise to the Bahamas on Carnival Ecstasy. DH has agreed to "be open minded" and give it a chance 😅. He's a drinker so I bought the drink pkg. Any other suggestions to help make it a great time? I want us to go on more so this is a make it or break it cruise! 😳

What kinds of activities would he like? My father would have been very reluctant to go on a cruise, but he was a people watcher, and would have loved a chair in the shade where he could take in the passing scene. EM

If your husband enjoys "resort" type vacations, he will have a fine time on a ship. No worries! He's agreed to go and be "open-minded"...so let that run it's course! He'll be fine, and all will have a great time!

On vacation, he likes to drink, sit in the shade and relax. He also likes to gamble, so we plan on going to the casino as well. He wanted to fly to Bahamas and stay instead of cruising; his thoughts is that we won't be able to relax and enjoy vacation. Feels we will be rushed. My thoughts was food and entertainment for kids included without feeling "worried " about older 2 wanting their space and being safe.

Did you book a Carnival cruise? You could ask this same question on the appropriate cruise line board for ship-specific activity suggestions.

Will do, thank you for the suggestion!

That's good to hear, it's been so long I can't remember. Thank you!

I book cruises so I don't feel rushed. A trip to Disney at this point is not a vacation for me. Its get up, get to the parks and wait in line. I needed a vacation after the last time I went to Disney.

A cruise lets you do whatever you want, from running around doing everything and anything, to doing nothing. My last cruise I spent a ton of time on my balcony reading and enjoying the quiet. My wife even tells me she caught me napping.

It's a vacation. He won't be forced to do anything but get off the last morning. EM

If DH just wants to sit in the shade and gamble, a cruise puts everything close by. No big trek to an outside pool area, just go up to the pool deck. The casino is likely closer than in a hotel in the Bahamas as well. The casino on a ship does not offer everything that a big casino does, but hopefully he will find what he likes. If you have a veranda cabin, sitting on the veranda, just listening to the sea go by is about as tranquil as things get. Hopefully he will get involved with the kids in the various ports, and he will find that the idea of a floating hotel is also a great advantage. Good luck.

Just one thing. If he gives the cruise a fair chance and does not like it (hard to believe but many people do not like cruises), leave him alone and don't come back with "we should give it still another chance".

All great suggestions, thank you all! And IF he doesn't like it, that's OK. We have lots of other things we can go do together, not on a cruise ship! I hope the "open minded" to "addicted cruiser" is true for him as well. Plus, I didn't even think about the multiple bars for bar hoping, that's a GREAT idea! We enjoy that around home. Thanks again and fingers crossed!!

I agree with appealing to what he likes on vacation. My fiance was less than enthusiastic about his first cruise. His teenage daughter swore to me he would HATE it. He thought cruises were all about shopping and going to the beach. I like ACTIVE shore excursions and can only tolerate so long on a beach before I need to get up and DO something. He thought he'd get board being "trapped" on the ship. We had a very port-intensive itinerary where we woke up in a different port every day. He likes food so being able to order multiple choices at dinner was right up his ally. It was a great experience and not what he expected. He's cruised twice since then and we have two more cruises booked!

It's one of the few holidays you can go on as a family, where no-one has to do the same thing as the rest. If some of you want to get off at every port, and he wants to stay on board, then fine! One might want to swim, another play a game, and a third snooze in the sun, or stay in bed till noon- great! And no fussing about where to eat which will please everyone- go to the buffet and choose the food which you never have at home because one child hates it... wonderful! :D

If DH enjoys a drink, then I agree that "bar hopping" can be fun. If you get to visit the same bar two or three times, and engage with the servers, they will quickly remember you; I've had some great chats with ship bar staff - even have a couple as Facebook friends!
