Solar Eclipse Photography

Here are some shots from Oregon. I did crop them down in Shutterfly, other than that, no retouching. It was wonderful and I am glad I went for totality! It was amazing to me how little of the sun had to show to be daylight.

It clouded over right during the time of total coverage. So I missed any good shots I could have taken during full coverage.

But as the clouds thinned they did allow for an extended time for shooting without filters.....

gallery worked for me...absolutely beautiful...we had clouds and rain...thanks for sharing all the photos.

Some from me in St Clair, MO, at the Darkening of Sun Festival. We had just a couple clouds, and hot, hot, hot weather! Boy, was the temperature drop noticeable and welcomed!

So many tremendous shots. I am so glad it worked out for so many of you.

Looks like, weather permitting, folks had a pretty darned successful session of 'eclipsography".

I put together a preliminary composite that may find it's place on a wall.

I really had a lot of fun chasing this event down. Glad 2024 is a while away.

In the end, 891 miles of driving round trip, 12 hours in the car, a hotel room for one night, and cutting out solar film to fit our lens filters was all worth it.

I'll have better composites later, but the ones I posted are all my bleary eyes could do after an epic day.

It was a lot of fun!

Love the great pictures of yesterday's eclipse that everyone posted. I was also out there getting pictures and thought I'd share a collage of some of my favorites. We're in the Washington, DC, area and had 82% here, so it was "partial". I did not have an expensive filter (it was a cheaper, paper version that fit over the lens) for my camera (Canon Rebel T1I). I used the zoom lens at 250 with some of these pics cropped.

I'm heading to Harbor Freight and look for a welding helmet insert to take to Alabama for the cellphone - see if that works. Filter stack too bulky and prelim tests with the phone weren't encouraging.

Wound up having an impromptu eclipse party at the passenger pick up curb at the Birmingham airport! Passed the goggles around to anyone that wanted to see.

It was way more fun than I would have imagined - will be unique, good memories of the event.

PS-cellphones can't always replace real cameras...

Dave, love the composite. It is pretty much what I would have done had I been shooting the eclipse. I opted to spend that part of the day on the golf course and I even made a par right at the height of the eclipse in NJ.....

Thanks for the nice comments on the shots that are no longer there. I updated the gallery with final edits done on the main system when I got home and, without thinking, deleted the original images posted there before uploading the complete set.

Rookie error, eh?

Anyway, the photos are all back there along with shots from our time spent as tourists while waiting on the Moon to show up for work.

Taken from just west of I-95 off I-26. Our home was in the path of totality, but as the hour approached, and checking weather apps, it didn't appear we were going to have clear skies. So we loaded up and drove about an hour west on I-26. Glad we did:

I just love your composite! How did you do it, if you don't mind my asking.

I was thinking about doing a composite, but I only stayed about 1/2 an hour after the total. I figured I would just rotate the earlier images.

Now that would be cheating!
