Disney Wonder Nassau Question

We were literally just there and I can't understand why people continue to say stay on the ship. Nassau people were surprisingly very friendly and helpful. The town and area are much "nicer" than many ports we have been to. The drive in the jitney from town to Cable Beach was pretty pleasant, actually. I am a pretty picky person. I like nicer things within reason. It was nicer than Jamaica, Honduras, and Cozumel.

My rec is to have a beach day. We took the #10 jitney (it's about an 8 minute walk to the bus), paid 2 bucks a person each way. We went to the Melia. Got a day pass and it includes a free starbucks drink. While there was some seaweed on the beach and a few people trying to sell stuff, but it was an enjoyable experience. We saw 2 ship employees on the beach there. It was not crowded at all.

I would classify the Melia to be a low level resort. It has a lot of room for improvement, but met our needs for the day. They are building a sweet looking Grand Hyatt near it and that will be where we'd get a room next time and use that beach. We do not go to the Atlantis or Blue Lagoon because how dolphins are treated there is unacceptable.

Let me know if you have questions. I absolutely say get off the boat. You're stuck on it 3 other days solidly. Why stay on it more? I would say most of the people got off on this day, too.

I'm in the majority. We were on the Dream in June and doing the same cruise again the end of May. This is one cruise I do more for the ship and Castaway cay than anything else. Nassau does not appeal to us and we enjoy the quietness of the ship on port day. Last June, we were able to ride the Aquaduck multiple times without waiting.

I said it was better than those. To each their own. I am shocked that I am in the minority here. I am usually the one saying "ew, this is not for me"

I got that you think Nassau is better. I lump those three together as "pretty awful."

Bottom line--we don't Dream because of the port selection. OK, one also has to consider the issues of short cruises in general and B2B should we opt for a 4/3 (which we did on the Wonder). And yes, a B2B would give us 2 Castaway stops. But IMHO, a trip that stops at Nassau has to have something of sufficient value to me to make me put up with that port...and we'd stay on board anyhow.

We just got off the Wonder and we had a great time. For Nassau we did the Dolphin encounter. Our girls are 3 and 5 and had a great time. I would recommend that. Don't let all of the people on this board scare you about crime in Nassau. We have taken several cruises there and never had an issue and have never talked to anyone who has had an issue. Its pretty simple, stay to the tourist area and you should be just fine, anything can happen anywhere but the main shopping area is fine. If you want to find trouble you can find it just like in any big city. If you want to get off and enjoy the shopping then you should, you will be just fine.

Are you a Disney person?

I think a lot of the DCL cruisers are Disney people that are taking a cruise and not cruise people taking a DCL cruise. This is why the DCL sub board is different from NCL, RC ect boards. And influences the opinion on ports.

My family tolerated Nassau because we wanted a short cruise that goes to Castaway Cay.

  • 2 weeks later...

We just returned from a week on the Wonder and spent a few hours in Nassau with a 3 and 10 year old. This was our second time in Nassau and the first experience was not nice, but we wanted to give Nassau a second chance. Well, this is NOT the place to take small children. We went to Atlantis--just to see it---ok, we saw it and it was just ok--not willing to spend a ton of money there-glad we didn't. We got bamboozled into purchasing a roundtrip ticket on "The glass Bottom Boat Company shuttle to Paradise island". Turns out that the name Glass bottom is just a name and is not really a glass bottom to their boats. My advice... do not do it! First-there is NO glass bottom, just shoddy boats in ill repair, I watched countless elderly patrons escorted onto decrepit ships almost falling trying to board, plus they crammed way too many people onto the boats. I felt ill at ease for the trip and would not chance a return, so we were out the money spent on the roundtrip tickets. Ok, by me, because I didn't want to drown that day!

Another vote for staying on the ship. I'm not someone who is super worried about the crime, the aggressive sales people don't bother me, husband grew up in the Caribbean. But for us, Nassau is just boring. There is nothing super interesting or exciting that we need to see. I have been to Atlantis, you can take a cab and just walk around and explore without buying water park passes, if you really want to see it.

Can you really just go to Atlantis and walk around and look at things? I thought that you had to have a wristband or they kicked you out. Also how safe is it to just take a taxi and how much would that cost?
