Unknown Credit card charges from cruise

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Last week I sailed on the Jewel of the Seas (cruise ended this past Sunday). I was reviewing my credit card transactions today and there are a bunch of charges from the cruise that I don't recognize and the "final" amount charged to my account is greater than what was on the final cruise invoice that I received on the last day from the ship. Who should I contact about this? I booked through a travel agent (if that affects the answer at all).

PS I'm from SW Ontario Canada - again if that affects the answer at all.

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Are the unknown charges actual charges or pending charges, if pending they should drop off in a few days, depending on your banks policies.

As for the difference in the charge and the sea pass bill, try the email shown here

Same here. Disembarked on saturday. My charge on Visa was $12 more than the guest summary given the night before leaving..

I called Customer service and she was very vague with response. Said I probably was charged for bottled water or coffee. Not going to argue over $12 (altho I didn't charge anything after receiving summary)

Also, have 5 seperate charges that are still pending after 4 days, which I didn't make. She said they will go away. But, why are they even there?

Those aren't charges they're authorizations. It's just a way to make sure your CC is still good. They drop off in 5-6 days.

I'll have to check my bill, but I would definitely argue over $12.

RCI has no control over the pending charges. The length of time depends on your credit card provider.

Thanks for the feedback and information everyone. I double checked and some of the charges are still pending - so I'll monitor them to make sure they get dropped off. In the meantime I'll call about the charge difference between what was on my invoice and what hit my credit card (the transaction that was processed). Thanks so much to everyone!!!!:D

Many pending charges drop off within a week as long as when your card company calls out to the originator of the charge and they are not responded to as valid. I have seen Casino room charge holds for a comp room as much as $100 stay on my card as pending for longer only because the casino never sent a release. The casino hotel I stay at now releases quickly so after a few days it goes away. These you talk of if they appeared after your summary don't sound like they should have shown up later though. Pending charges show up in a few hours after applied.

The daily authorizations correlate to your daily onboard account spending. Each night, they will authorize your card for the amount spent that day onboard to make sure your credit card has enough available credit so that when they do charge the card at the end of the cruise, it won't get declined.

Looked at my charges, and low and behold $12.82 in extra charges were there. Called and got it reversed.

Mini bar charges for Evian water! What a scam!

Based on what I've seen here, that sort of thing happens all the time. Not necessarily a scam, possibly human error. Happened to me once also and quickly got the charge credited.

Pre-authorizations are not released by the originator and your credit card company doesn't electronically talk to the originator to ask for a release. Originators have no control over how long a pending charge stays on your card. Credit card companies often treat merchant types differently, which is why charges from a casino may be treated differently.

A credit line hold is placed on your card to protect you from exceeding your credit line or Over Drafting on a debit card.

Not sure where you got that information.

LOL, maybe scam is a little too strong. :)

To charge you $12.82 for two liters of water?

This happened to me too following my Rhapsody TA. They did remove the charges after I phoned but I wonder how many people don`t bother to phone.

Don't want to divert your original question, but does anyone know if there is a a way to get a digital copy of your final cruise invoice? When on the ship I elected to forgo the physical copy via the in-room TV assuming that they would send me a digital copy via email.

I don't dispute our final bill, I'm just curious to see a breakdown of where I spent money.

If I'm remembering correctly? Call 800-256-6649, I believe there is an option on the call tree to get a copy. You will need to have the RCI booking ID handy.

The charges that a lot of people are reporting are all $11-$12. They are for the two bottles of Evian water that are the only mini-bar items now left in the cabins. I think the word "scam" is just a tiny bit strong, but it is being reported so many times that I have to wonder how much money is being made on people who don't notice, don't care, or just don't bother to call. I called, mostly on principle, when it happened to me a few weeks ago on the Harmony.

For anyone else who had my same question, before I saw steveru621's response with the phone number, I had emailed "web_cruise_comments@rccl.com" with my request and my name and reservation number and they responded in about 2 hours with a PDF of my final statement. Thanks!

This happend to me too while sailing on the TA with the Rhapsody.

I called at the German office and they proposed to send a mail. But after 2 weeks without any response I would like to call to an US office. Does anyone knows a telephone number not "toll free" as I can't dial these 800 numbers out of Germany.

Go on to Skype on your PC and you can dial toll free to the states.
