Passport for a UK sailing

I am going on the celebration on the 11/6/17 and was wondering if i need my passport as i am sailing out of the UK can any one advise thanks

They need your passport details at check in which they pass to the port authority / immigration so disembarkation on return is straightforward with no formalities.

That's the Midnight Sun trip from Newcastle, which goes to lots of ports in Norway. Hence passport needed.

I wonder how many Brits are unaware that very many countries that we travel to on holiday legally require everybody to have a valid ID document on their person at all times ?

Nationals will have government issued identity cards, but in absolute terms only a passport is recognised for foreigners, although there are documents for permanent and semi permanent alien residents.

Spain is one example, although the police generally have an understanding attitude towards tourists - and a photocopy of a passport is often enough for routine matters.

We have members who post here who live there and can expand on my basic understanding of the situation.

Good point WCM. Easy to fall foul of local requirements. As well as a photocopy of our passports we usually carry our driving licences around with us as 'official' photo ID but as you say that may not strictly be enough. Once we'd been through immigration in the US on our second day our driving licences were accepted. But it's definitely worth checking carefully in the Cruise News which will tell you if you need to take your passport on shore.

All people resident in Spain - whether Spanish born or immigrants like us - are required to carry ID at all times (Passport or NIE card or a Notarised photocopy). Legally this also applies for tourists HOWEVER, unless you get a real 'jobs worth' police officer (and believe me these certainly do exist!!!) a photocopy is usually acceptable as long as you can take the original documentation to the Police Station within a few hours if so requested.

Just a thought re the OP's original query - would you need your passport for a Round Britain cruise if it only called at UK ports? Perhaps so as you may well be outside territorial waters for some of the time. Anyone know?

I would say Yes, they are going to want some form of ID for you, passport is the most obvious as there check in system is already geared up to scan/read it and process whatever data they want.

We have been advised by our ta we need our passports for the highland fling 4 night cruise, even though all ports are in scotland

Thanks both for that - not that I'm doing such an itinerary although I do fancy it sometime. But it just made me wonder as we were discussing passports.
