Rolled the dice

Leaving for b2b2b on Splendor 11/27. Wife had perforated colon surgery today. I know you can get insurance to cover this situation but this 27th cruise and have always rolled the dice that all would be okay. If we lose everything not the end of the world life goes on. We do have emergency evacuation insurance as I worry about a major expense. All is not lost yet she seems to be making a remarkable recovery.

Doctor is surprised at how fast she is bouncing back at 67. Even though right now she has drainage tubes the doctor thinks there is a good chance she can do the cruise. Here's hoping

Just sharing that anything can happen at anytime and only you can decide if you can afford the loss if things don't work out

Best wishes to your wife for a continued speedy recovery.

Thank you for the reminder that accidents and unexpected events occur.

You have indeed been lucky. It might be time to think about at least some insurance for health related issues. I always think if I lose the cost of the cruise, it will not be financially devastating but a $100,000 medical evacuation or air ambulance home would.

Keeping fingers crossed for a quick recovery. I am leaving on the Dream on the 27th and hoping that I will be feeling great by then as well. On October 3rd I had to have colon surgery as well. They took 15 inches of colon, my left ovary, appendix, and lots of scar tissue. I am one month and feeling pretty good other then sensitive in lower left side and get tired easily. I did not have drain tubes but did have my incision pull apart from fluid build up and it drained (yuck). I do have insurance for peace of mind. I am 53 and will say this has been the hardest surgery for me and I can't lift anything over 10 pounds for another 1 1/2 weeks. We are driving to New Orleans from central KY but stopping overnight about 2 hours from the port. At this point sitting for long periods is not too bad but I am still sore when I stand up and move around. Keep you in our prayers and hope you are able to cruise.

I am wishing your wife a speedy recovery. I am a nurse and if she takes her time, ambulates, and continues to take her antibiotics; she will do fine.

She will probably only be able to do minimal activities on the first leg of your cruise (which I will be on). But the second leg, she should be improving more and more each day.

Let this be her recovery therapy. It sure beats sitting at home.

Hope to see you on the cruise:D.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy on 8/18/16. I told my breast surgeon that I wanted him to 2 things for me- Keep me alive and get me on the cruise that we had booked months ago. He very capably did both things for me. 7 weeks later I was on the Miracle and all of my medical issues faded away. I can't think of a better goal for your wife than to make it on the ship. Cruising is the best medicine! Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and thanks for the reminder that the best laid plans can go awry.

Wishing your wife an easy and full recovery! Hope you are back their on a ship in no time! I lost my entire colon 3+ years ago to a perforation. It was a rough recovery and the first thing I did once I felt well enough was to book a cruise!!

Best wishes to you both!!!

Well, if you spent $100 on insurance for each of your 27 cruises, that's $2,700 so you are about even dollar wise if you have to cancel this cruise.

Hopefully, there's a speedy recovery and all turns out well.

I hope everybody is healthy and able to travel.

Next time you might want to think about getting one of those $100 airline credit cards. Most of them have $10,000 of travel insurance plus extra perks like a free checked bag and early boarding. Just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing. DH and I have been on 53 cruises and I never purchased insurance until the last 2. By the time I got to #30 I figured if I lost everything I was still ahead dollar wise. By the time we got to #50 I was WAY ahead. Then DH started having some medical concerns so purchasing insurance seemed like a better option. It is a gamble, but I do enjoy the casino :)

To the OP, I hope your wife has a speedy recovery. My mother recovered from a total knee replacement in 6 weeks with the incentive of a cruise looming over her. I hung a Carnival poster on the wall at the foot of her bed while she was in rehab to remind her :) The medical staff LOVED it.

I thought the same thing...hopefully you have a balcony so she can get lots of rest during the cruise with no responsibilities for anything to do...guilt be gone. And with a balcony can get lots of fresh air and sunshine to speed her recovery.

Is there such a thing as a double digit dance? If so, I'm late! 82 days and counting! Whooohoooo. Got 3 excursions booked. Final payment done. And looking at ordering in room beverages. The apparel in the Fun Shops online has gone down hill lately. We used to have a couple shirts waiting for us but what they have now is kind of lame. Wife wants the beach bag and towel set. I have had the bowling alley balcony on the Legend and the Miracle and they are amazing. There will be a lounge chair out there, as well as the regular chairs, so that will make your wife's relaxing in the fresh air that much easier.

Glad to hear she is doing so well after the surgery. I am 5 weeks out today and feeling a bit better each day. Walking is one of the best things she can do to get herself to heal quickly and also to keep well hydrated (I have a hard time with that for some reason). I have also found that staying on a low residue diet helped me. I was actually released from doctors care at 2 1/2 weeks but he said it can take up to 6 months for the swelling in the intestines to go away and not to be discouraged over that. I had bowling alley balconies on my cruises and love them! I don't think there would be a better way to recover then to relax and enjoy the ocean. Best of luck for you and her and have a wonderful cruise.
