Trains and sights in Rome on May 1st holiday

Does anyone know if the trains (the Intercity train, or the regional trains) run as normal on May 1st from the cruise port into Rome and back? Our port stop in Rome is on that day, and I was wondering if we may have some issues getting into Rome, and if we should book a shuttle instead? A shuttle will be way more expensive, and take 90 minutes each way.

Also would most shops/restaurants in Rome be open on this day? I know the Vatican won't be, but that's fine for us as we have been before and just wanted to do a walk through the main areas, people watch, eat Pizza and Gelato etc.
