Lisbon ...... Lisbon ...... Lisbon ......

Small tip for those who visit Lisbon on their travels. The taxi drivers as you leave the terminal building are crooks. We wanted a simple car to take us (2 people) to the Zoo (VERY highly recomended) which is about 5 miles from the port.....first driver wanted 35 euros and laughed us off when we offered him 20. We laughed in his face and walked away knowing the actual price it should be having been before. Approached by another driver 10 yards away who offered us the same ride for 15 euros (which included a mini guided tour enroute).....which we gladly excepted in the drizzle. Upon exiting the zoo we picked up a random taxi outside the park and were charged 10 euros back to the ship !! Be warned, ignore the pushy drivers that prey on us the vulnerable tourists. Walk away from them and pick up one far cheaper ....... !!

Lanzarote ...... Lanzarote ...... Lanzarote ......

Another travel tip is the port transfers P&O offer in Lanzarote. We ignored their offer of £4 per person (each way i think) to take you from the dock to the edge of town (800m outside town), instead opting for a feely available taxi outside the terminal who escorted us to the centre of town for 5 euros (not per person). Not a huge saving but a "no brainer" when you see the trudge you have to make once ushered from the transfer bus........... Spotting the journey was maximum of a mile and a bit we enjoyed the stroll back in the glorious sunshine.

I think your assertion that the taxi drivers at the Lisbon terminal are crooks is disgraceful. You seem to have had a bad experience of one of them but in my view it is completely inappropriate to refer to them all as crooks. I would hope that the fact that you 'laughed in his face' does not lead Lisbon taxi drivers to conclude that all P&O passengers are rude.

You should expect to pay a little more at a port. First of all, you are a 'captive audience'. Second, at some ports/countries, drivers have to make their money in the cruise/tourist season.

But it seems here that the driver was equally rude, if he 'laughed off' the customer.

Taxis will rip you off all over the world. They will either not have a meter, or they will take you 5 miles for a 1 mile journey.

In Egypt we were told it was £20 egyptian from town to our hotel. Taxis always started at £60 after ages haggling they accepted £20.

Madeira taxi drivers gouge those who need a cab from the end of the toboggan run to the centre of Funchal. Captive market and all that.

Public transport is easy and cheap in most cities, you just need to do some homework before you arrive.

Sadly this kind of behaviour is not restricted to foreign taxi drivers or tourist traps. I've been ripped off by a taxi in London, even though I clearly wasn't a tourist.

Have also had a taxi driver in my home town attempt to rip me off by taking a ridiculously long route from the railway station to my home. It must have been either late at night or filthy weather, because I usually walk. Told him to get back on one of the "usual" routes and refused to pay the difference between what the fare would usually be and the extra for the detour. Wouldn't have minded if there'd been a reason for the detour such as an accident blocking the route, but there wasn't.

It was simply a heads up for future passengers to avoid being ripped off....35 euros for a 10 euro fare is getting milked........We are not rude though we will not be treated like mugs ! End Of...

It's a good warning for others. We've used taxis in Lisbon (not from the port) and they must be the least expensive of any European Capital. We once took the train out to Belem at a cost of €1.50 each (4 of us). We flagged a taxi for the return and it cost just €5. A lot less hassle for less money.

We had the exact same experience. The port taxi driver tried to charge us 25 Euros to go to the aquarium. We caught the shuttle bus to town and got a taxi there for 8!
