Namibia by Night

Hi Everyone,

As you know the time is approaching for the Christmas cruise (yeahhhhhh) and I have most of the tours etc sorted.

One of the last shore excursions to go up was "An evening in the Namib Desert"

As is always the case with 'special" SS events it is quite pricey so I'm wondering if anyone has done it and their feedback.

Thanks folk :)

In 2013, we were on the Explorer from CPT to Dakar. This particular excursion was called "Dinner in the Dunes" at that time. Upon arrival at twilight, we were escorted through a path with lighted torches to the dining area where a huge camp fire burned illuminating the dining area. As the moon rose over the dunes, a buffet dinner was served on white table cloths SilverSea style. There was also a local band and much dancing. It was a wonderful evening. I've also seen a DVD of a similar event which was held under a circus tent in the dunes.

Highly recommend it

Thanks for the quick reply

The actual booking has it as "Dinner in the Dunes" so my bad. It was originally listed in the port info as "Namib by Night "

Is it significantly different from the day dune trip? I have that booked for the next morning, but would cancel the morning in favour of another if they are essentially the same

The day dunes trip as I recall is (a) either a low level flight seeing trip which we took; or (b) a 4 wheel drive up and down the dunes. Any flight seeing is expensive but worth it. Next time, we'll take the land trip as it appears very exciting.

The Dinner in the Desert is a stunner! This will be my third time, and I wouldn't miss going again. After our last time, my late husband and I decided that this particular excursion was one of the top ten in many years of SS travel.

Yes, it's pricey, but, IMO, totally worth the expense. The music, the dancing, the costumes, (one time a full moon) the flowing wines, even the big buffet added up to a magical evening. I think you'd love it.

Ditto. Done that a few times. One of my absolute favorite SS Experiences. Do not miss it. When SS dropped it due to expense, I talked to the Corp Excursion guy. He told me it would be difficult to get enough people to sign up since it was so expensive. Glad SS has reconsidered. Dune rides you can do in lots of places but there is nothing as magical, musical and moving as being in the desert @ night, billions of stars and, if you are really lucky, a full moon rising!!
