White Night

Sorry for asking a basic question, but being new to Azamara, what is the White Night everyone is talking about? We have cruised many times with Celebrity/RCI/Cunard but going on our first Azamara Journey cruise in June 2016. Is it a deck party? Does everyone wear white?

Thanks.

Yes, it's a high-energy deck party that starts with a wonderful buffet spread including crepes suzette prepared by the executive chef and hotel director. While white attire is encouraged, it is certainly not mandatory. For many of us, this is a real highlight of the cruise, and should not be missed.

Hi Colleen and George

It is indeed weather permitting a deck party. A very good buffet with a la minute cooking stations is set up on part of the deck from about 6.30 and the entertainment starts somewhere between 8 and 9pm. It is good fun popular music to dance to and all the officers who are not on bridge duty attend and mingle. Usually the hotel director and f and b manager or exec chef make some lethal pancake dessert they do not hold back with the liquor!!

Some guests do not like buffets so they will join the evening for the entertainment only. We are not fans of buffets but love this one and the ambience of eating on deck, tables all set out with white linens etc. We noticed last cruise they have now bought special furniture to use at this event rather than drag stuff from other venues - nice white chairs etc.

As to wearing white, its up to you, many people do, but the cruise team are at great pains to tell guests come whatever white is not required. Last trip DH was actually wearing a pale lilac shirt and light trousers due to a packing malfunction, he usually brings a cream or white shirt. I have a white sun dress but have in the past gone in a lighter outfit with a white shawl. It is entirely up to you

Really really looking forward to our first Azamara experience. My TA has been trying to persuade me for ages, but I just love the Celebrity S Class ships. Finally taking the plunge. Just hope it won't be too quiet for us. We are late night people!

There is a bit of a myth about Azamara being quiet at night. It is not raucous but usually the Looking Glass (oh I think it will be called the Living Room by the time you are on board) has disco each night and it all depends how many go up, it can be quite a lively place. It very much depends on the itinerary if there are early mornings it can quieten down about 11pm.

We have found if there are Scandinavians or Spanish on board it is lively later - those from the far north are often drinking in the Piano Bar by the casino, I think for them, the lure of affordable (aka included) drink compared to life at home makes for a very lively time

Is there a way to tell which night is the likely White Night on a given cruise?

Is it usually one of the later nights in port other than the Azamazing Evening?

I like to plan out ahead of time which nights we will request specialty restaurant reservations, and I don't want to miss out on the White Night buffet.

When you board they will know when it is - though occasionally they have to move it later in the cruise if weather issues are identified for that night and they can switch to another (if they cannot or do not have enough notice to change they do it indoors).

It is not on the night of the Azamazing evening

i agree with Ann- i just look at which night is 10 pm sails or later and figure one of those nights. The speciality restaurants do know which night is white night and which is the evening off ship. i eat off ship a lot and come back to dance.

Thank you ellbon and uktog for your responses. They were very helpful.

I think I can narrow it down to a very likely night on our cruise, but will make sure once we board.

Yes, thank you for the replies.

Anything else we should know as newbies to Azamara??

Colleen & George

I suppose we could write you a very long list but the main thing I would say is when on board - if you want it, ask, if you are not sure if it is included/possible/relevant ask, if its not right, tell someone.

Do it as you want-

  • go into a show late if that works well with your dining plans, you will find many do and sit or stand at the back;
  • no need to rush for a sun lounger, there are plenty;
  • breakfast where and when you want - indoors outdoors, main dining room, mosaic café, buffet, your room. Just make the choice that is the hardest part
  • Brunch if they do it one day is a treat go for a late breakfast or an early lunch (or both!)
  • The Officers BBQ if they do it for lunch is another great one, certain officers have perfected the skill in making Tacos, waffles or just counting beans as they serve them
  • As others have said, the evening buffets are very different to Celebrity so check out the theme and see if it fits for you
  • Make plans early for a speciality restaurant if you are planning to visit them, they get booked up later in the cruise

Relax, smile, interact with the onboard team and you will have a great time.

Thanks. Sounds good to us! We love our cruises and always board with an open mind and a good attitude. Little niggles don't bother us, so we are looking forward to a great cruise.

Used to walking miles on the bigger ships!!

We have just come off the Journey and had an excellent White Night in Marmaris. We were entertained by local Turkish Dancers which included some very entertaining Belly Dancers which were followed by the Journey Singers, Band and Tony Markey. It was also Captain Magnus' first White Night event as Captain which culminated with the Crew Waves on deck. Overall a great performance.:)
