Vienna questions--Viking Grand European Tour

We are on the Budapest to Amsterdam Viking Grand European Tour. It look like we dock late afternoon in Vienna. Is it feasible to do any sightseeing on our own after dinner? If so, what would be a recommendation. Not particularly interested in going to the Opera that evening.

Also, the next day if instead of going back to the ship after the included city tour, we are thinking of striking out on our own for the Schonbrunn Palace instead of doing the ship's optional tour. Is that something that would be fairly easy to do?

Thanks for all suggestions.

The ship's staff should be able to help you but find the website for public transport in Vienna or plan on taking a much more expensive taxi ride. We took the metro without any problem. If you have time there is also a road train that goes around the ground and up to the Belvedere. We also walked from the ship to the Prater where we rode the world's oldest ferries wheel. Getting there by foot depends on where your ship is docked.
