News Flash: Global Warming Stopped Dead in its Tracks!

Young man wears shorts in the MDR for 8 nights and now hell is freezing over.

In related news, Cruise Ships departing from Miami will now be escorted by Ice Breakers.

I brought up the topic prior to our cruise and was practically condemned for even mentioning shorts in the MDR...so I felt the need to share my experience for other moms....thx!!

Thanks for the info- my 12 year old would love wear his shorts on our upcoming August cruise on Reflection. Glad it all turned out well.

Keep in mind that Celebrity has a habit of being consistently inconsistent. What happened on the OPs cruise could change on the Equinox and also be different on every other Ship in the fleet.

I do have to add --- for all the moms out there ---- that just because the OP got away with this, it's not guaranteed that everyone will. Different ships and maitre d's have long been known to differ in their interpretation of the rules, and shorts in the MDR for dinner do not meet the published dress code. Better bring at least one pair of long pants, just in case.

I didn't see your prior thread but ya, there's a lot more virtual daggers thrown around here than real steak knives in the MDR. ;)

But I'm sure there was one or two diners out of the 500 or so diners in the MDR who were whispering to each other about your transgression for the entire cruise, probably each waking second. Well they needed something to complain about.

I did see the prior thread and she certainly was not condemned.

Does this mean by the time my Edge cruise rolls around Celebrity will be completely Carnivalized? It's a slow decline, but it could be coming.

It could be. On our Summit Bermuda cruise last May we had Traditional Dining and we were seated with a couple that wore shorts to the MDR on more than one ocassion. No one said anything to them. One night they came to the MDR for dinner looking like they just came from the beach. Now this was LATE seating at 8:30 pm, so I'm sure they had time to change. Again even though we mentioned it to the head waiter, nothing was ever said to them. I did mention it in my end of cruise survey.

I certainly hope not!

We sailed Carnival about 7 yrs ago with friends who had younger children and at the time the "rule" was no shorts in the dining room, and my friend adhered to the policy even though her boys (they were 7 and 10) were not happy about it.

It's a shame when people think that getting away with something is a victory, ugh!

As others have said, the maître d' on this cruise may have been lax in allowing shorts into the dining venue, others are not, so I would be sure to bring a pair of pants (they can wear decent jeans) just in case, especially for the evening chic nights.

My boys started cruising when they were 3 and 6. We insisted that they dress up and wear suits (when it was the custom on formal evenings). To this day (they're now 19 and 25!), they still dress up!

But to be honest, I DON'T CARE WHAT OTHERS WEAR! WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If others don't want to dress up, so be it! Enjoy your dinner, enjoy time with your friends and family! Don't worry about what others are doing or wearing... SHEESH!!! Life is too short! Bash me now, I DON'T CARE!

I couldn't have said it better. If CruiseCritic is any indication of the majority of X cruisers, the decline will be faster and WILL be coming. X is going to lose many customers to the higher end lines if the trend toward this decline continues. Many have chosen Celebrity for it's refined elegance, but many on here seem to think that "evening chic" can be interpreted in any way they choose. Including football shirts, shorts, and even hats in the dining room.

Carnival is a nice product for their demographic and for pricing. However, what I am observing is the lushes are "jumping ship" (excuse the bad pun) to Celebrity for the drink package.

It's sad, but then again it's always about money, and I guess Celebrity cares more about the bottom line profit than about refinement and elegance.

I typically just follow the rules. In my house, I make the rules. In someone else's house, they make the rules. On someone else's cruise ship, they make the rules. If I had to wear high heels in the main dining room (which I simply detest and won't wear ) I would eat in a different venue if possible or find a different cruise line that allow flats. I wouldn't just ignore someone else's rules for my personal convenience.

Now, if I were to see a kid wearing shorts in the main dining room, I really don't care. Doesn't affect me. I just personally wouldn't do it because I find it rude.

OP... Thanks for posting your real world results. I'm sure they will help those who have kids who want to wear shorts to the MDR.

Not every MDR on every Celebrity ship is the same. We have seen in the past people turned away because of shorts, etc. when trying to enter. It all depends on who is running the MDR that cruise.

I was on this cruise and saw a middle age "kid" turned away from the MDR as he was wearing shorts. So maybe the OPs kid was accepted as he was only a small boy? Also saw a women in capri yoga pants, flip flops and a baggy t-shirt one night in the MDR. Not sure what category she fell into but she look like she just left the rumba class. Too each its own I suppose.

Cheers!

Oh to be 11 again and not a care in the world. Plenty of time to grow up, no need to pretend to be a grown up and paraded out in front of others.

In a few years time when he wants to impress others he'll no doubt be beginning for the latest designer clothing and long trousers.

Not sure I get the logic that says a more casual approach by Celebrity (supposedly evidenced here by a child being allowed to wear shorts in the MDR) will see many flocking to the premium lines - they're much more expensive (than the rates that most of those dining in the MDR) than Celebrity and several have no Formal nights whatsoever.
