I am cruising to St Thomas this April and plan to take a ferry over to St Johns as I hear the snorkeling is wonderful and that it's beautiful there. Would anyone recommend a specific place or special info?? I'm a little nervous but I think we will be ok. Just planning on taking a taxi over to the ferry. Any suggestions would be welcomed! Thanks :)

Trunk Bay is a lovely place to snorkel but it has a white coral sand bottom which does get stirred up and clouds the water when there is a wind .... and that is its big downside.

That... and the hundred tourists splashing around, standing up on said sand, stirring up the bottom, and scaring away any decent sized fish... but they did cement signs onto the bottom telling you when you're looking at coral, sponges, or grasses. ;)

We've done Trunk twice on our own. We go to the far right side of the "island" and into water too deep to touch bottom. No stir up. There are other beaches on St John. I just like Trunk. Next stop in St T will find us on Trunk!

There is much better snorkeling to be found on St John's than Trunks Bay. Salt Pond to the far East. Leinster Bay next to the Sugar Plantation on the north. A walk in, but a great island (Watermelon Cay) in the bay to swim around. My favorites are Maho, Whistling Cay, Turtle, and Cinnamon all close together.

Get a little further into the island and reap the benefits. You can take a taxi, or snorkeling Charter.
