Last winter we enjoyed a day of "urban trekking with a local guide" with Patatour Chile (http://www.patatourchile.com/). We rode the rail system, a streetcar, a couple of funiculars and walked all about visiting fish and vegetable markets, viewing the incredible murals, etc. Our group (organized on the roll call) also requested that a full lunch be included in the tour and our guide picked a lovely restaurant with very good food and service. They have a five star rating on TripAdvisor that is well earned.

Take a city bus to Vina Del mar about 10 minutes away. Beautiful beach and a neat Easter Island museum with a statue head from the island right outside. Valparaiso is a great city and we enjoyed the waterfront, funiculars and great food. We especially liked El Peral and Casa Cervecera Altamira which is a nice brewery/restaurant.

We spent two days in Valparaiso. Two and a half days in Santiago. And then another few days driving through the wine region in our rental.

Overall, we both agree that out time in Valparaiso was the best of the three. Very unique. We did the 'free walking tour'. It was excellent and proved to be a great starter to our two day visit.

One good thing about Santiago was how easy it was to get around by public transport/subway. We stayed at Ibis Estacion because it was beside the two bus terminals and had a subway station a half block away. Our bus from Valparaiso terminated there. Our bus to the airport to pick up our rental car started there so it was perfect for us. Room was very good, standard Ibis. Breakfast was good. Only downside was that there were not many good restaurants nearby. Not an issue since we found ourselves eating in the restaurant district on each of the three nights we were in town.
