Danger in Mexican ports?

Is it true that cruise lines are cancelling stops and/or changing itineraries because of dangerous conditions in some of the Mexican ports?

There are MANY threads about this all over Cruise Critic. This one is just a couple of threads down the board:

Over the years, there have been some ports on the Pacific side of Mexico dropped due to violence in Mexico. Some have come back on the schedules, at least on a limited basis. Acapulco is probably the one most notably absent right now.

In general, cruise lines are doing fewer cruises to Pacific Mexican ports than in the past.

Going on three MR cruises--

Cabo/PV/PV in October, Cabo/PV/Mazatlan in November and Cabo/Cabo/PV/Mazatlan/La Paz/Manzanillo/PV/PV/Zihuatenejo in January.

Mazatlan is just starting to get more cruise pax. Acapulco is still very limited, though I know of one NCL cruise going there in the near future.

We've gone to most of these ports multiple times over the past 10 years. We go somewhat (a few blocks) off the beaten path and haven't had any issues.

Before there were violence in some of the towns the west coast cruise industry got hit by the depression. We're finally getting more ships out here. For a while our only option was two Carnival ships. Now we have three Carnival ships, several Princess ships year round and a smattering of other cruise lines.

As far as I know/heard prices on those cruises have been rather low and many lines decided to bring their ships elsewhere. It seems many passengers arrranged their own excursions and profits for the cruiselines werenot high enough.

As a tourist you will be absolutely safe in those ports. During wintertime thousands and thousands of canadians, americans and europeans are staying in those regions to escape the cold.

So will there be places right where we dock that are OK to walk around? We will be in PV, Mazatlan and Cabo for our first MR cruise.

It's all safe. What the cruise lines fail to point out is that no cruiser has ever been involved in any problems in these ports. The cartels are going after each other, they have no interest in tourist.

I would be more afraid of going to a movie theater in the US then any Mexican port.

We have pointed out (in the past) that the only port (this side of the Atlantic/Pacific) where an innocent cruiser has been shot/killed is the Port of St Thomas, USVI. And yet, all you see in the papers and on CC is about the concerns on Mexico.
