Okay, so what's the best thing you've eaten in a HA cruise... and the worst?

We'll be sailing on Zuiderdam in March for 20th (!) anniversary. So excited!

I'd love to hear your advice - what did you love, and what should we avoid?

I love the steaks in the Pinnacle Grill. The worst thing I've gotten was a pork loin that was very fatty. I probably should have sent it back but there was enough food that I didn't go hungry.;)

I love the Bread Pudding.

best thing - steak at the pinnacle grill

worse - beef stroganoff (beef cubes floating in watery beef drippings with a miniature dollop of sour cream, topped with sour pickles) yuck

I am partial to the filet mignon in the Pinnacle Grill but the absolute worst thing I have ever been served on a HAL ship was the green coloured pumpkin pie one American Thanksgiving on the NA.

Best = the filet in the Pinnacle and the dover sole in the MDR

Best dessert = flourless chocolate cake

Worst = underdone salmon (not a sushi fan)

Worst dessert = supposedly pumpkin pie

Best -- Pinnacle filets and lamb chops and chocolate volcano cake.

Worst -- all desserts in the Lido and main dining room -- tasteless.

Best--rack of lamb or lamb chops in Pinnacle. (Lido bread pudding is my runner-up)

Worst--cakes. We went to a "cupcake tea" about 5 years ago and the cupcakes had NO flavor. The only difference between the varieties was the food coloring they used to make them look different. Same cruise, a late dessert extravaganza, the cakes were gorgeous but had no flavor.

Best:

I love the Lamb in the MDR

Bread Pudding at the Lido counter where ice cream is served.

Don't particularly care for much entree type food in the Lido unless it's just come out.

I think the pizza is pretty bad

Best - lamb in the MDR and Lamb chops in the PG and the MDR

Worst - desserts in the Lido

Best = chocolate souffle (so good that i had 2 last month when i was on board! SO good!)

Runner up = blueberry muffins (fresh baked every day, with a crumbly top - so good!)

Best: Snickers Cake

Worst: Scrambled Eggs ("strangled" eggs ;) )

I agree on Pinnacle steaks but let me add another best, HAL's soups are almost always very good. Can't really think of a worst, I seem to like everything :p.

My best was the petite filet in the Pinnacle Grill. My wife's favorite was the lemon brulee tart- best dessert she's ever had!

The worst was some overcooked pheasant in the MDR-

My best is a tie between the basa in the Canaletto and the wasabi tenderloin in Tamarind. The vanilla souffle and strawberry sorbet in the Pinnacle Grill were the best desserts.

The worst is a tie between the tenderloin served on gala nights and the porterhouse steak in the Pinnacle Grill. The biggest dessert disappointment was the strawberry cheesecake in the Pinnacle.

My DW's worst has to be the terribly salty shrimp in the halibut and shrimp scampi in the PG and creme brulle in the MDR that was served still frozen.

I will agree with others and note that most desserts are bad and lack any flavor. I find most cheese that is served on board to be of very low quality also.

Best: the crab cakes in the Pinnacle Grill

Worst: tie between the pizza and the scrambled eggs :eek:

Best: Everything in the Tamarind.

Worst: Can't think of anything, maybe the Lido coffee

I agree, the soups are consistently good. WORST: A stringy cream of wheat type hot cereal in the Lido. I should have known something was up when I asked for it and the server made a funny face! HeHe. :eek:

I agree, the Porterhouse in the PG was almost too tough to eat. The knife provided would barely scratch it. No kidding.

Best - 7 oz petite filet mignon with sauteed mushrooms

Worst - Not-So-Classic Baked Alaska (a melting mess)

We have only cruised on one HAL ship, the Maasdam, but I my wife and I were happy with all of our choices in the MDR, the buffet, and the one dinner we had in the Pinnacle.

Best: gnocchi with short ribs in the caneletto.

Worst: the bacon on the Eurodam

Best: Osso Bucco in Canaletto (served only on longer voyages)

Worst: Some of their "Italian" sauces.

Coffee on HAL is soooo much better than the stuff on Princess!

Haven't sailed Princess, but it's way better than Celebrity's too!! It isn't too strong or too weak, it has a horrible taste.

Food can be sent back. We have done it if it was not prepared properly or it turned out to be something that we did not like.
