Puerto Caldera advice requested

My husband and I are planning a Windstar cruise out of Puerto Caldera in January. We would like to come in a few days early. Can someone recommend an area to stay in? Can we get to the port by public transportation or do we have to book private car? Are taxis readily available.

Puerto Caldera is the industrial port near Puntarenas. I would plan on taking taxis or hiring a driver to get around.

What do you want to do or see before your cruise? What type experience do you want?

Two areas I would consider would be Quepos/Manuel Antonio and the Monteverde/Santa Elena area. Both are touristy but in very different ways. Both offer a variety of lodging levels making it easy to find the level of luxury you're after.
