Can we use Euros in Israel?

Can we use Euros in Israel or should we get Israeli money?

Not when we were there, and we went to a fairly big restaurant that did not take plastic, which caused a bit of a problem.

We would not had thought of trying to use another country's currency, but were surprised that plastic was not freely taken.

We found that those involved in tourism, eg taxi drivers at the ports were happy to take euros. But definitely take some shekels, and plastic.

We were able to pay our final driver with the last of our shekels & the balance in euros. Probably to his advantage :rolleyes:, but no useless left-over shekels for us. :)

Most places won't accept Euros. You might be able to use them in the markets in the old city in Jerusalem and maybe in Accre and Nazereth. Some places might accept US$.

Most places in Israel, including Taxis accept credit cards with no problem.

All other places - Israeli Shekels

We used US$ in Bethlehem.

You can easily change money at the banks or money exchanges.

Plastic is the best. You can also use ATMS to get shekels.

Most places will take credit cards. Many prefer US dollars. Bring clean bills. They are being accepted in many places. The US dollar is strong. Israel will also take euros. On my last visit to Israel 2 weeks ago, I did not have any shekels. The only place that they insisted on shekels and would not accept credit cards was the Hadassah Hospital to see the Chagall windows. We exchanged a small amount of money with other tourists.
