Bar Harbor, Maine - Car Rental?

My family and I are taking our first Canada/New England cruise at the end of September and we can't wait! Wondering whether Bar Harbor, ME is set up to easily rent a car and tour on your own? I can't seem to find a car rental place anywhere near where the cruise ship ports.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

In a lot of areas Enterprise car rental will deliver and pick up - to your location, not requiring you to go to their office. If Enterprise does offer the service, you would probably have to pay extra. Of course, you could take a taxi to the (nearby) airport - where Hertz and probably others have desks.

A real nuisance, but being able to drive around Mt. Desert - and get to Jordan Pond - on your own might be worth it.

While there is a board dedicated to the New England ports, it is not easy to do a car rental in Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor itself is a very walkable town, and depending on when you are there, the Island Explorer will run you around Acadia.

The closest car rental to Bar Harbor is located at the Hancock County/Bar Harbor Airport which is about 12.4 miles of 2 lane state roads from the tender dock. Travel time is about 25 minutes. Maybe you can arrange the rental agency to pick you up in Bar Harbor, and be able to leave it there when you're done.

You'll be visiting BH as it nears peak foliage viewing season which means the roads to/from BH will be packed with leaf peepers, and BH and Acadia National Park will be crowded with tourists.

Since BH is walkable, you won't need a rental for that. You can tour ANP with either of 2 tour companies: Oli's Trolley Tours or Acadia National Park Tours. Both have excellent ratings with TA.

So what would you need a car for?

There is also a free public bus service, Island Explorer, the will be running during your visit.

As a couple of people have said it is really not set up to easily rent a car.

There is a lot to do in the immediate area and maybe this is one not to rent a car.

Thank you Keith!

If you want to go to Acadia and the Island Explorer is operating, please consider using that service. Parking in the park is horrible when there are tons of people visiting. We did see one car get towed last time we were there because of where they had parked.
