Viking's port of Erlangen (Romantic Danube - Nuremberg to Budapest)

We will be taking Viking's September 7 Romantic Danube cruise that leaves from Erlangen (near Nuremburg). We'll be staying in Munich for a few days before embarking.

We are planning to take the train from Munich to either Nuremburg or Erlangen, and then take a taxi to the boat. Does anyone have any tips that they can share for us independent travelers to help us decide which route to take?

Thanks.

You can take a direct fast train from Munich to Erlangen, via Nuremberg, actually. With such an ICE you do not need to change trains. Some train journeys to Erlangen require a change of trains. You can check this on the Deutsche Bahn website: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml

Erlangen is on the Regnitz river whereas the port is on the canal. I reckon it will be easiest to take a taxi from the main train station to the boat.

I recall someone on CC earlier this year asking about Erlangen. I wonder if somebody who has done the trip has direct info on the port.

Erlangen is an interesting old university town. If you have an hour to spare ...

We were on the Viking Var and did not make it all the way to Erlangen. We ended up disembarking in Nuremberg. This was a last minute change, as it was not announced until our final briefing the evening before disembarkation. We were traveling independently post cruise and had rented a car in Erlangen, so we had to taxi from Nuremberg to Erlangen. My advice would be to check the location of the ship before leaving Munich.

We are booked on a future Romantic Danube cruise and were told the ship will not be in Nuremberg. Do you recall the cost of the cab ride and the duration of the ride? We will fly to Nuremberg independently.
