Copenhagen Canal Cruise

Recommended Posts

We used one of the tours that started in Nyhaven (right as you enter the area). We liked that we were able to buy our ticket and walk right onto the boat. There was at least one other company leaving from Nyhaven (a little ways down the canal) that might have been slightly less expensive. We were happy with the guide and the itinerary.

From the notes I made after researching this issue in the Rick Steves European Cruise Ports guidebook:

"Netto-Badene canal tours cost half the price of their rival, Stromma Canal Tours Copenhagen. Location: At Nyhavn, the Netto dock is midway down the canal on the city side while the Stromma Canal Tours Copenhagen dock is at the head of the canal. At Christiansborg Palace, the Netto boats leave from Holmen’s Bridge in front of the palace while Stromma Canal Tours Copenhagen boats depart from Gammel Strand, 200 yards away. The boats leaving from Christianborg are generally less crowded than those leaving from Nyhavn."

Cost: Netto-Badene 40 DKK for a 1 hour, narrated tour.

Stromma Canal Tours Copenhagen 80 DKK for a 1 hour, narrated tour.

We took the Netto-Badene, and it was quite lovely. Last year, these boats were included in the Copenhagen Card. Please note that according to their website, they use glass roofed heated boats from October -March so you will need to dress accordingly since I would guess in mid- September they would use open air boats (we had open air boats last year during the last week of August but you might want to email them just prior to when you leave on your cruise to check).

We checked the weather forecast and rushed to Holmen's Bridge as soon as our flight landed because the weather was the best at that time. It is a really lovely boat tour if the weather is warm and dry, so if you have a brief respite from the frequent rain try and hop on a boat then. Also, please bring layers with you since it can get a bit chilly on the water.

That might have been true last year, but now the Copenhagen Card only covers the Stromma Canal Tours Copenhagen and only for the tour that departs from Gammel Strand.

We used the cheaper Netto boats. Depending on weather, you might wait for one that is covered. They have sliding ceilings so you can stand up and take great pictures. There are some that are open totally. We skipped that boat and waited 15 min for the closed version.

There is no advantage to taking the other tour that costs double.
