We sail in and out of Copenhagen next July on Princess. Having never sailed in Europe before about how long do we need for transfer time from ship to airport, check in time at airport to get to our gate? What would be the earliest flight time you would recommend going from CPH to ATL? Thanks much!

Assuming you are flying on Delta back to Atlanta, there are a wide variety of times. This includes as early 6 am. Clearly, that's too early. There are times around 10 am, but that is cutting things too close and extremely tight. Better would be with Delta or their related airlines departing at 12:50 pm or 2:50 pm. That allows more time and "safety cushion" if your ship is late arriving and/or there is slowness getting off of the ship, getting a cab, etc. Copenhagen's airport is not too massive and/or a huge distance away from the docking place. BUT, it all takes time and patience!!

Copenhagen is a super great and charming city. Will you arrive there a day or so early in order to have plenty of time before your cruise to see AND to experience fully this historic city with such wonderful architecture, character and people? Or, can can you spend an extra day there in Copenhagen after your cruise? Or, both??

Lots of options to consider.

EUROPE??: Having been to twenty-two different countries in Europe and done four cruises there, the first "tip-off" is that most cruises are fairly port-intensive. Lots to see and do in many ports. Your Northern Europe options are much better, in most cases, than just some Caribbean islands with a nice beach, a few tee-shirt ships and an old fort. Much depends for where you will be sailing, how long and your personal interests, travel style and desires. Tell us more about your ports and what you are seeking. How much for history, culture, nature, shopping, wildlife, museums, etc.??

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

SuzieO. Answers: 1/hr, 1/2 hour and Noon. If you feel lucky maybe an 11/am Flt out. Are you Self-disembarking or letting Princess do it? Cruise Terminal is North of Downtown Copenhagen, CPH Airport is South. With luggage...I'd take a cab, for maybe $30USD. I'm a solo backpacker oftentimes, and use Copenhagen's cheap Metro and Train system, but why stress out with luggage transferring in busy Train Station etc. Locomotiveman Tom

We had a flight out of CHP this July at 12:20 pm and had no problem making it. We left the ship just after 8am, took public transportation, checked our bags and went through immigration and were at our gate by 10am.

We were docked at Oceankaj where I'm sure your Princess ship will also be docked. (The Regal Princess was docked there at the same time as our HAL ship.) We did self-debarkation just after 8am and took public transportation (#25 bus from Oceankaj to Norreport and M2 subway from Norreport to CPH). It was easy and cheap to do--36DKK per person (the equivalent of about 11 USD for the two of us).

I would not recommend a flight before noon, but you can easily make any flight after that time.

Thanks everyone for the great information. I was thinking the 10 a.m. flight would really be pushing it and to look for a noon time, but wanted to be sure.

We will arrive in CPH early, staying two nights, before we embark on the Regal Princess. I am searching for hotels; nice large rooms, good breakfast and close to nearby attractions/sights that we can walk to. So, if you have any recommendations please feel free to share where you have stayed.

Glad you are planning accordingly AND getting in early to Copenhagen. Lots to see and enjoy there. Below are some of best tips, including doing Tivoli in the evenings when the lights are magically. Even if you are "big kid" and have enjoyed Disney World, etc., previously, there is lots to experience at this historic park in Copenhagen.

On hotels there, yes, location is very important!! Prices vary much, go up and down, depending when you book, how high is demand, etc.

Keep your good questions rolling along to help your excellent planning/research.

Enjoyed a 14-day, Jan. 20-Feb. 3, 2014, Sydney to Auckland adventure, getting a big sampling for the wonders of "down under” before and after this cruise. Go to:

for more info and many pictures of these amazing sights in this great part of the world. Now at 120,303 views for this posting.

In Copenhagen, we stayed at The Square hotel that overlooks the main plaza in front of their City Hall with its large tower. This picture angle is framed by two statutes in front of this famed civic building. The design for The Square is also very unique and nice. It gives more of the feel of being in Denmark with the special design style and approaches. From the Travel Channel on her "Passport" TV shows, Samantha Brown stayed there and gave it good, deserved play/praise.:

At Tivoli, their main gate is lighted in a spectacular and welcoming manner. Walt Disney was inspired in 1950 to construct Disneyland after visiting this park in the heart of Copenhagen. Tivoli opened in 1843 and encompasses eight hectares with 1,000 trees and 400,000 summer flowers planted throughout the gardens. It boasts upwards of 40 restaurants, a Chinese-style pantomime theater, open-air concert stage, amusement park and Denmark’s longest salt-water aquarium. In the evening, the park is lighted up with Chinese lanterns, multi-colored lights, etc. That truly makes it a “Magic Kingdom” to make Disney happy. Website at: tivoligardens.com.:

Copenhagen's famed and beloved Mermaid statue is fairly small (1.25 meters or 4.1 feet) but attracts large crowds. It is now back after spending the summer of 2010 in China. The heroine of Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale gazes out over Copenhagen’s harbor. The Carlsberg brewery owner commissioned this sculpture and it was unveiled in 1913. After years of the statue being vandalized, the Little Mermaid was moved to her present and safer perch.:

Copenhagen's canal views and going under a bridge. YES, doing this canal tour is a must-do to allow better views of the various historic buildings from a relaxing angle in this Royal city.:

A guard and statue in front of the current Royal Palace in Copenhagen. Amalienborg Slot includes four rococo-styled residences of Denmark’s royal family. This site includes a museum surrounding an octagonal cobblestone courtyard. You can witness the Royal guards walk from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg Palace for the Changing of the Guard daily at noon. Adult fee for museum about $13. For more info, see: ses.dk/amalienborg.:

Copenhagen’s Nyhavn or “new” Harbor is actually old and charming. This waterfront entertainment district is lined by brightly colored 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants. Serving as a "heritage harbor", the canal also has many historical wooden ships. Lots of people and fun activity!!:

I can't recommend a hotel with "large rooms" because we stayed at the Wakeup Hotel Borgergade which has rooms similar in size to those on the cruise ship. But they do have an excellent breakfast buffet and the location is within walking distance of all the major sites--from the Little Mermaid to Tivoli.

If you are looking for a hotel with large rooms in a convenient part of town, be prepared to spend big bucks. Accommodations in Copenhagen, like most of Scandanavia, are very expensive. Even our tiny room at the Wakeup Hotel was not cheap.

First let me thank you for all the great information and wonderful pictures in all sites I have visited for our May trip.

Question for you is this. After security etc. at CHP airport do they have food courts? Not sure about the airplane food and my husband has sugar issues so want to have something fresh for him on the flight.

Thanks

Appreciate your nice comments and the follow-up with this Copenhagen airport question. From the website:

https://www.cph.dk/en/

you can get added information about the specific food and dining offerings at this facility.

On this part of their website:

https://www.cph.dk/en/Shopping-and-tax-free/restaurants-bars-and-cafes/

they detail more that seems to indicate a fairly wide range of options and potentials.

On this airport, the good news is that it is not too massive and sprawled out as is true in Paris, London, Frankfurt, etc. It is still the largest airport in the Nordic countries with 25.6 million passengers in 2014. Some of their areas are fairly nice with wood flooring, etc. It has two main terminal areas, so the specific food offerings might vary depending which one is being used by your airline.

Hope this helps!! Added questions, needs?

Just a small correction.

Terminal 2 and 3 in Copenhagen is actually the same terminal, its only the check in counters that are separated.

So the food offering is the same.

But there is a very limited selection at Pier C where all flights to Great Britain, North America, Asia etc departs from.

So wait until the latest possible time before you go through the passport checks.

Appreciate this extra, added information from Danish viking, a wonderful expert who is so sharing about Copenhagen and its wonders. His thread and hard work/smart are great for helping visitors get all types of questions answered, etc.

If you are sailing Regal Princess Princess says you can book flights as early as 9:30 AM (according to Princess Eazy Air). Regal docs at 5:00 AM.

Hope that's helpful!
