Wonder if anyone can offer any advice on the nature of the west African and Cape Verde stops? Have never been to either, am a single lady and am looking at the Canaries with west Africa or canaries and Cape Verde.

As with many other ports of call, you will be harassed by street vendors which can be tedious or even intimidating. There's not a great deal to see in Cape Verde although it's very colourful. We visited Mindelo on the way back home from South America. But Tenerife is just as bad these days with lots of homeless people sleeping rough and public toilets which are .... er....less than

'safe'.

I would choose West Africa every time. The Gambia is rather like Africa in microcosm with lots to see and very welcoming people. Dakar in Senegal has many interesting features. A visit to Goree island which was one of the main "loading" ports for slaves is fascinating. The contrast between English-speaking Gambia and French-speaking Senegal is interesting.
