My wife and I have not done the Mediterranean before and are looking for some advice on what to do in Naples. We are considering taking the ship excursion Capri, Sorrento & Pompeii (NP02) but heard alot about wait times etc.

We are also flying in the day before and really don't know what hotel to book.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to these Cruise Critic boards. Lots of good and helpful people here, plus tons of information, etc. Last June, as detailed below from my live/blog, we did a great Solstice cruise from wonderful Barcelona hitting most of the same ports as you did. Check it out for more details and many visuals on this great ship, charming Barcelona and other key tips and ideas.

Doing a ship tour for Capri, Sorrento & Pompeii might be possible, but that's lots to do in that type of "mass", large-scale tour. We did a private tour for this great area with so many good options to consider. Can't do it "ALL" here in this port or many others as their are too many good things to do in such a short time period. Below are a few of my photo tips and ideas to consider in these great ports.

Here are a couple of other suggestions to help you and other future travelers. FIRST, scroll back through all of the earlier postings. You will see many different items on ports you would visit and/or at the board for each separate cruise line in planning for your upcoming cruise. SECOND, do a search on these boards by each city and you will see lots of postings on various subjects connected with each port stop.

Reactions and questions??

Yes, going to your roll call board will be helpful, plus the area boards for Italy and Spain.

For Barcelona, Spain, etc., check this board, including lots of ideas on hotels here:

Since Venice is one of your key stops, you might look at this earlier posting that I did on the Italy board that shows many options and visual potentials for this city that is so great for "walking around", personally sampling the great history and architecture.

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 68,086 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

In Dubrovnik, we started with a local cab driver who gave us a “panoramic tour”, including crossing this unique bridge near the main cruise ship docking area. Then we drove up and up through narrow twisting roads to the high point overlooking Dubrovnik and near the cable car high station. From this point, we could also see part of Bosnia and and Montenegro. The “super star” view was down below with this angle of the harbor and walled city. Beautiful!!!:

This is a view of the historic Dubrovnik wall at an upward and outward point built on top of the rocks and where it overlooks the Adriatic Sea. Walking this wall is a wonderful and unique way to sample and see up close and personal what makes this city so special.:

Don’t miss the sail-in for Venice. This was our view from the top of the ship as we approached the historic center of Venice. On a beautiful day, as we enjoyed, this is so spectacular!!!:

Overlooking Positano along the Amalfi Coast, this is the view as we dined, family-style for lunch, at La Tagliata during our private tour for our small group through RomeInLimo. The views here were super and the sun came out in strong force as we enjoyed our three-course lunch with local wine and drinks. Their website is http://www.latagliata.com.:

It was a full moon for our evening in Venice. Here is that view of the moon as we walked at night past the Doge’s Palace. At night, you want to hang out in and around San Marco Square to hear the various orchestras playing, see people enjoying, etc.:

The Solarium was one of our favorite areas on the Solstice. Food and drinks were nearby and it was very relaxed and sophisticated. Quieter, too, as it is an adults-only area. Two hot tubs here. Not crowded, especially in the evenings. Nice art and design are there as a part of this sparkling ship facility.:

Hi, we are in the same cruise. You should check out the rollcall. We have a private tour for Popeii and Amalfi Coast start yesterday but it is full already. You should check it out maybe someone might start another private tour. And the price for private tour is much cheaper than a ship excursion.
