Winery tour with lunch out in the country. The city is uninspiring, at best. You will see some landmarks and probably get a mini-tour of the city on your way out to the country, and coming back in.

Thanks so much

Our TA with whom we were traveling booked a city tour and trip to a family-owned boutique winery called Artesana in Canelones, Uruguay. It included wine tasting, a BBQ lunch and even wine making! She booked it through an Argentinian company, Say Hueque. We didn't join them as we wanted to see Punta del Este which we booked through the ship. We enjoyed seeing Punta del Este but didn't have nearly enough time there (our ship was late due to winds in the channel and it's about a two hour drive back and forth from the port). Plus our guide was HORRIBLE (German was her native language and at the very beginning of the tour, she told us she usually does the tours in German and admitted that English was her third language and she was studying it the night before....) as was the bus driver (not his driving but he deserted the bus a couple of times) so we should have done the winery. Everyone in our group who did that raved about it, particularly the lunch which they said was amazing. If we had more time (if our ship wasn't late arriving) and a better guide, we probably would have had a better experience, but if you want to maximize your time in Montevideo & Uruguay, the city tour and winery are probably a better bet!

We did a winery tour that included a tour of the city as well. Price was good and tour was with SouthExcursions. You can contact SE to see if they have a tour available, or if not, you would have to start a new one.

I am looking for a winery tour for our cruise next year. Do you have a company that you can recommend?

Hi....we participated in a Winery Tour & Lunch & Tasting that was arranged by another party directly with the Winery staff.......our tour was in 2013 when we docked at Montevideo, Uruguay. It was called the Varela Zarrantz Winery located some 100 hectares of land approximately 15 to 20 minutes drive from the Pier...and our tour on that day was for around 14 people.....the Winery arranged for transportation to pick us up at the pier.....a partial drive of the City.....coastal drive which was very surprising ...beautiful and scenic ...and the infrastructure was quite nice and modern.......on arrival we were shown the vine yards, the processing plant, the storage facilities.....then we were escorted into the basement of a 100 year old farmhouse where a table had been set up for all us. For the next couple of hours we had lunch of cold cuts, various cheeses and quiche pies along with an ample assortment of wines to savour with our food.....afterwards they gathered us all up and took us back to the pier.....it was a very happy drive. (LOL)

Just above is the link to their Website.....they arranged for the transportation and as the Winery is a family run business ....members of the family conduct the tour on site and attend to everyone's wine needs during lunch.....the cost in 2013 was $55.00 US per person paid at the site on the day of arrival at the Winery.

Enjoyed immensely.....hope this helps anyone looking sor something similar to do in Montevideo.

My husband and I were there in January and did an excursion to Bodega Bouza winery that also included a brief stop at Plaza Independencia in the center of town and a couple of quick stops along La Rambla. It was great to get an overview of the city, but the clear attraction of the day was the winery...beautiful setting with a lovely tasting and lunch.

Here is a link to my blog post on Montevideo, which you might find helpful:

Good luck with your planning!
