Check over on the Hawaii board, here:

This topic is discussed almost daily there. It is certainly a good idea. Is it "best"? That is a personal judgment, but is certainly a good idea.

If you look over on the Hawaii board, you will see some important info on parking your car overnight.

Is it best to rent a car for two days in Maui? I am assuming that since you dock at 8 , you can be in the car by 10:30 and then since you leave at 6 the next day, you could return the car as late as 3:30.

Book the car for two days! It works great - easy parking near the port and very easy to drive there. Have fun! ~Joyce

Please tell us where were you able to find easy parking near the port?

It also depends on when you are going. We week before Christmas week and the week through the first week of January car rental rates go from $20 for a compact to over $100 a day for the cars. We would require a minivan and a standard size car for 11 of us and the rate for the week before Christmas would cost use over $400 a day. We are choosing to use tours and excursions and The Bus (public transportation). Other than that we would have probably rented vehicles at least for one or two of the islands.

They let you park in a small lot and along the road side just as you return to the port. Ask at the rental car location. It's pretty obvious when you drive out on the shuttle the rental car companies provide. There is no charge for parking. You can also return the car to the rental company lot and ride the shuttle there and back each day if you are worried about more secure parking. We have never had an issue. I wish more of our USA was as safe as Hawaii. Enjoy!!

There used to be a small lot along the road, but it was closed permanently as of about March of this year.
